35. I should have been more specific.

The common feature in them is exaggeration of the dark skin and thick lips. I've been seeing Arab faces exaggerated a lot more recently. The comparison might have worked if I had been careful to point that out.


They are indeed disturbing in other ways as well.

underscore the idea of handing our ports over to terrorists. I don't think it's saying all Arabs are terrorists but that ** is stupid and/or corrupt enough to give them to the ones who are. I took it as a slur on ** not on all Arabs.

But something nags me every time I see a cartoon with exaggerated Arabs nowadays. It seems to me to be too easy to make that association. I don't hear anyone else express reservations about it most of the time, so it seems that I'm either making something of nothing, or seeing a disturbing trend. In either case the thing to do is call it out, start a discussion, and see what other people think, in order to broaden my perspective and balance my own perceptions and reactions. That I have.

"Blackface"? Hello? They're ARABS. They have darker skin than white people, that's how they look! Capisce? What should the cartoonist have done, made them white so as not to offend your sensibilities? That in my mind would have been more racist than the current picture (which is not racist at all), since it would effectively say that darker skin is of less value and thus we should 'bring them up to our level' so we won't unnecessarily denigrate the poor people by showing them in their real skin color.

Because of you the OP will cease posting any cartoons whatsoever. Thanks a fucking lot!

I didn't say they're in blackface.

I don't know what the cartoonist should have done. Maybe it should, exactly what he or she did, or maybe emphasizing the weapons or other features instead of the faces.

Any time I see a villain identified by an exaggerated racial feature, I find it dampens the humor for me a great deal.

36. Sure many arabs have dark skin....

Some even have light skin and red hair.

I have never met anyone from the UAE who looked like they were wearing blackface.

My issue is that the 3 arabs depicted there are drawn to look like sambo figures. Look at the eyes and lips... The look is classic blackface. I doubt anyone would deny it.

Perhaps it is that you simply don't see the issue from my perspective. Maybe you don't see how sambo is a racist caricature of a person of color, in this case being used on arabs.

I'm sure that the german people of 1938 germany saw nothing wrong with how jews were being depicted in cartoons either.

And we see where that led.

As for the OP posting the cartoons, I'm glad they did. I read no racism on their part, I do see it in the particular cartoon. The OP did a service by posting the cartoon which intentionally or unintentionally underscores the racism that underlies this topic.
