I've come to the conclusion, although somewhat unfairly judgmental, that anyone who claims to be a republican who lives a middle-class life-style is a complete uninformed jackass.

This week's list of things made in the US:

some X-acto knives
Fiskars scissors and self-healing cutting mats
Helix metal rulers
Champion socks
some high end carpets
Simple Human trash cans
Surefit slipcovers
a great deal of Pyrex
Lincoln Wearever cookware
Calaphon cookware
Redi-shades (paper and cloth quick install blinds)

Don't know if it was union labor, but they had made in the USA on them all... (some had states, too)

I've read where the gov't allows that label to be attached to goods that are not completely made in the US.

Thanks Tom Delay (Marshall Islands?)

56. Something of an urban legend, in fact; it applies to garments almost
Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 10:12 PM by politicat
exclusively. Hard goods that state that they are manufactured in the US are, because of the cost to ship hard goods compared to softlines. (You can get a lot more shirts in a cargo container than you can pots and pans for the same end price, and the islands do not have the power or minerals infrastructure to support any metals or plastics industries. Also, since they depend on tourism for 50% or more of their income, meavy manufacturing is economically a loser.)

Regarding the Marshall Islands: From http://pacific.unfpa.org/Countries/mh.htm

Because of its “Compact of Free Association” with the USA the Marshall Islands economy is heavily dependent on USA development assistance. Over 80% of government revenue comes directly or indirectly from US grants. Domestic production is limited to fisheries, copra and handicrafts.

You may be thinking of the Northern Mariana Islands, which are a US territory. However, according to wikipedia, "the lifting of World Trade Organisation restrictions on Chinese imports to the United States has put the Commonwealth-based trade under severe pressure, leading to a number of factory closures." The Marianas' primary manufacturing was in the area of clothing, rather than other goods, and most of those were for companies like Abercrombie & Fitch, Penney's, Sears and Kohl's.

The citizens of the Marianas are US citizens, by the way. They do not vote in Presidential elections, though.

Yes, Delay has been rotten when it comes to the Marianas, but at this point, Chinese imports are impacting production in the Marianas far more than any other factor. The Marianas have a minimum wage that is about $1.50 higher than the minimum wage paid in Thailand, much of China's garment manufacturing, Pakistan or Vietnam, and working conditions are better than in most of Southeast Asia (though that's not saying much.) (Not that I'm defending the actions of Delay or how this territory has been handled.)

That all said, however, Champion's production facilities are in North Carolina. There's a pretty high incidence of white lung among people in the area from the ginning, spinning and knitting process.

On Edit: The Surefit facilities are in Pennsylvania, too. Some jobs are still US.

79. cop-outs
the American auto companies employ hundreds of thousands of American workers in the United States. GM alone employs over a hundred thousand. In contrast, Toyota(toy-auto) for example, only employs about 40,000.
Around here in Detroit, they employ nigh on EVERYONE and not a single Toyota factory exists in the state. They like the south, where the wages are low and the unions are weak.
Oh well, I guess some folks just need some sort of rationalization for owning their BMWs.

US made products. As a consumer, I only purchase US made items and I recently found an online mall of US made products. We're now considering membership with http://www.shopforamerica.com/home.php for our own product lines. If we join, we'll be in good company. Zippo Manufacturing, Vermont Teddy Bear, New Balance, All Clad Metalcrafters, and Kitchenaid manufacture in the US. SAS makes quality shoes and handbags in the US and I believe Diamond Cut Jeans remain US made. I just stumbled onto USA union made garments at http://www.imagepointe.com/current/index.htm Other union made items can be found here: http://www.uawregion1c.org/UnionMade.html

It might humor you to know that a fellow DU member sold and shipped their product to China earlier this year. They were unable to find a formula that works as effectively as our own. I'm still delighted that our small business shipped US made product to China.

Most of the sexual lubricants in my store are made in America. Wet, ID, Foreplay, Motion Lotion, all made in the USA.

A few adult novelties are still made here too -- but what a lot of companies do now is product development here, and maybe the first run of a toy, but then send it off to China for mass production.

We also sell some lingerie made in Pa.

69. Well, the Walmart _STORES_ are made in America.
It'd be freaking hard for Walmart to prefabricate the stores in China and bring them over here and put them on a site overnight. Even if over half of the contents in a Wal-Mart are "Made in the PRC" .

In any case, manufactured housing still gets manufactured in the USA. For the most part. Canada might make some and Mexico others, but it's generally easier and cheaper for buildings to build local. That part just hasn't gone away yet.

Mark.

70. Lots of chocolate. Hersheys comes to mind.
Except I hate that they got a stranglehold over Cadbury. Cadbury make a darn sight nicer milk chocolate than Hersheys ever will but due to something that Cadbury and Hershey have signed pretty much every Cadbury bar in the USA has to be manufactured and sold by Hershey. And they just don't make it the same!

Though Hershey do make some kick-ass WHITE chocolate. Their cookies and cream nuggets are to die for. And their Special Dark is pretty darned close to Bournville to my taste - so plain and white chocolate I give Hersheys the thumbs up but milk chocolate? Pffft...

Mark.

75. plenty of cars, commercial trucks
While the US makers are downsizing and closing plants (as well as moving more production to Mexico), most of the big imports now have US plants. Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Nissan, Mercedes, BMW... Hyundai is bringing a new plant online in Alabama i think, and Kia is looking at a site in Georgia for a plant. Mercedes builds Sprinter vans in North Carolina, and is planning to expand plant capacity to build more of them. And large commercial trucks too of course (Volvo, Mack, Freightliner, International, etc. ), though those companies are now largely owned by foreign conglomerates. The reasons on whether to build a car in the US or not depend on salaries of line workers, exchange rate, import duties, and so on. I suspect the number of cars built on US soil has actually increased in recent years, despite Ford and GM's declining market share.

Not all bad news. But once china gets up to speed... we're in trouble.

 There are really quite a few goods still made in America. The Travel Channel has a show with Cliff from Cheers traveling around focusing on American made products. Pretty interesting show IMO.

Cookies and candies have been outsourced to Mexico. The chips will follow - only a matter of time.
