Can we please stop talking about racism?
I am so sick of hearing that people who oppose the ports deal are racists. That is ridiculous. Perhaps some are, but suddenly Bush supporters are talking about political correctness in the Ports deal and it is driving me crazy.

This is national security. It has nothing to do with racism. It has to do with minimizing risk when it comes to our ports. It is LOGICAL to question the deal when the UAE has had past links to terrorists.

Geez, if Australia had such past ties, or Canada or whatever, it would be rational to question giving them the contract.

End of rant.

1. I really wish we could stop talking about it all the way around, not just

in the ports deal. There are so many bullshit uses of the race card that a lot of legitimate compalints are met with a rolling of the eyes, and I'm just tired of it overall.

4. I agree......I call it the "cry wolf syndrome"
I am just surprised they chose the port deal for their use of the race card...trying to use it in their favor!!

3. and technically, people mean ethnic bigotry, not race
since Arabs (and Persians in the case of Iran) are Caucasian.
I do agree with you for the most part, but I bet some on the right are against it because of bigotry.

That would be a safe bet! :) It is even possible for some on the left to harbor those feelings...however, like the OP and you, I feel most of us don't care if it the UAE or Brazil! It also doesn't help that it is a government-owned company. I don't know about you, but I was pissed to find out the UK was in charge before and took over during Clinton's presidency.

5. you know that immediate reaction
people had to it, when they knew nothing about the deal? that was bigotry from a lot, not all, people. face it, if there had been a story about a subsidiary of a UK company operating a few terminals in the US, it would have died overnight.

Most people have moved on and learned something about how ports operate, and have fallen into the nativist camp or the globalist camp on this issue. that is beyond bigotry for most people.

but anyone who said, even to themselves "Arabs are running our ports? oh, no" is, on some level, bigoted. most people have moved past it, but some still haven't.

6. If those guys are concerned about real racism, all that
they have to do is look in the mirror. They got as many votes as they did only because they appealed to the covert racism in their conservative constituency. If there were no racist Republicans, there would be no BushCo.

8. Yeah, instead let's talk about the racism of US policy--attacking
a foreign nation w/o provocation, removing legally elected leaders (Haiti, attempt in Venezuela--just to name a couple of recent ones), killing, maiming, torturing innocent civilians, stealing their natural resources. Oh yeah, we got lotsa racism we can legitimately talk about if they want to start down that road!

11. You GO, Talismom!!!
 Americans are so confused and in denial about racism, completely unable to broach the subject in any rational fashion... This turnabout by *co has everyone a-twitching. It's actually quite amusing viewed from a distance. It would be hilarious if ALL our lives were not hanging in the balance.

9. there is a section in my Bible *House of Bush/House of Saud*
That takes issue with Bushes campaign in 2000 regarding racial profiling. It was supposed to be about blacks in urban neighborhoods being singled out, but it became about profiling Arab decent appearing people. He made big promises, before 9/11 to ease up on middle eastern folks, especially in Florida, 'the flight training ground'. They pull up the race card for everything ie Hispanic right wing Supreme Court justice nominees. I'm tired of them dragging, Condroideesa, out as an example every time the want to show how liberal, women, and black friendly, they are. Those right-wing talk show hosts go on and on sometimes about the Dems not pushing black candidates. They receive the talking points from above and them hammer them in on the radio, TV and newspapers. Lying, deceiving, bastards.

10. It has to do with $$$$$ and bogeymen.
Not to mention posturing politicians, gotcha politics, racism, and a good dose of xenophobia.
