21. I wasn't impressed.....
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 04:54 AM by BooScout
I think Letterman had the opportunity to go for the jugular and blew it.

I absolutley loathe O'Reilly and was really looking forward to last night's show (Letterman is shown a day late in the UK)....and I was very disappointed, especially after all the buildup here.

It was not what everyone here made it out to be. IMHO.

6. Lets be objective
Lets be objective on this. Letterman was outclassed on this. Even Letterman admitted that he was not smart enough to debate O'Reilly on the issues.

He admitted that he had never watched O'Reilly so he really did not know first hand what O'Reilly is really like. He stated that what O'Reilly put out was 60% crap, (VERY VERY LOW CLASSED REMARK), and how would he know without ever watching the show.

I do not like O'Reilly but he handled Letterman in a very classy and proper way. I was embarrassed for Letterman.

Watch the video again and then tell me how classy Letterman is. Letterman is big enough that he does not need to act that juvenile.>

18. Have you ever watched Letterman's show prior to last night's O'Liely?
Letterman has done "juvenile" humor for years. Still, people come on his show knowing that Letterman will poke at them because they want to peddle their books, movies, or just their own publicity. When a guest comes on, they are in Letterman's world and are subject to his ridicule or respect as he sees fit--that's the game and they know it.

Letterman is not a political scientist, he is a citizen who happens to be a comedian. I applaud him for jabbing a stick into the ribs of O'Liely. As a citizen & a comedian Letterman has done a good thing--now that's class.

22. Actually I thought Letterman's 60% crap remark was brilliant!
It showed a LOT of guts and it just totally slammed O'Reilly's titantic size ego to the ground. O'Reilly gets over on all his guests by being a bully and threatening and physically intimidating them even.

The 60% crap remark was excellent. It made fun of O'Reilly pontificating self righteous air in a way that EVERY viewer immediately understood and it shut O'Reilly down. And that was not his only good slam. He really went after him hard over Sheehan and the War on Christmas and other loud obnoxious comments by O'Reilly. If only the rest of the media (Ken Olberman is the exception) were willing to be tough on O'Reilly, he would be gone from Fox in two weeks because he couldn't take it.

He got totally slammed by Letterman. It was the best Letterman I've seen since Letterman had Rush Limbaugh on in the early 90's and did the same for him.

Letterman is my hero for having the guts to face down O'Reilly and send him home with his tail between his legs. I only wish there were more public figures willing to stand up and speak out.

23. It would have been better.....
If it had been 90 % crap instead of 60 %........I still think Letterman had it in him to knock O'Reilly to the ground and held back. I'm tired of people holding back. I want the floor wiped with dirtbags like O'Reilly.

30. But see that's where the element of class comes in..
IMHO: The listening audience knew he meant 90% when he said 60%. That way Letterman got to slam him AND walk away looking like a gentleman.

16. Letterman is educated
He's one of the smartest minds on television even if he admits otherwise.

The funny thing is that one only needs to be vaguely familiar with the facts in order to make O'Really look ridiculous, which is what Dave did.

Yeah, I just hit it.

Go back to writing e-mails to CBS. Maybe they'll fire Letterman -- in 2013 or something, if your awesome plans go well.

28. Dave came off very well, and the audience sure was with him.
He knew his facts and got in some zingers that O'Reilly's guests never would, since he'd shout them down or cut their mikes. Welcome to DU, nocares, but you're in the minority on this, and not only on DU...

19. LOOOOL!
One of Dave Letterman's public hairs has more "class" than Bill O'Reilly could even dream of.

Did you like Dave's jokes about Bush on tonights show, by the way? I guess the FreeRepublic e-mail campaign really worked, huh?

24. Letterman is a comedian, not a pundit...
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 06:32 AM by Cooley Hurd
...and Letterman was revealing his gut feelings about O'Reilly. Incidentally, his gut feeling about BO was right on the money.

You're missing the point and the significance of the interview. The point of the interview was for the entertainment of his (Dave's) audience (and they certainly seemed entertained by it). The significance of the interview is that BO was finally taken to task for manufacturing "outrage" and it was done on a mainstream television show watched by millions.

17. That was gross having to
listen to bo for that long..but I made myself do it so I could comment on this.

Letterman had some good retorts to bo's bullshyte but Letterman is a comedian and I guess he can't be expected to know all the counterpoints to bo's brainwashing techniques.

But Dave was good in the parts when he said it was important for us to know "Why we are even here"(in Iraq).

And he let bo know he didn't think much of his "War On Christmas" schtick!

32. This is a good place to
post this that I found on buzzflash..

"Summary: On CBS' Late Show with David Letterman, Bill O'Reilly resurrected his false claim that a Wisconsin elementary school banned the singing of the Christmas hymn "Silent Night," erroneously attributing the school's changed lyrics to political correctness. In fact, the new lyrics were merely part of a 1988 Christmas play called The Little Tree's Christmas Gift. Later in the interview, Letterman admonished O'Reilly, asserting, "I have the feeling about 60 percent of what you say is crap."

http://mediamatters.org/items/200601040009

Dave did good because he didn't know for a fact that bo was lying about these Christmas examples but he said he didn't believe him, anyway..good call.

And you can see from the video more what's goin' on.
