In an upcoming Hartford Courant. It was in response to an op-ed from Kathleen Parker, who was not disturbed by illegal wiretaps. Thanks to DU in regards to the Bob Barr info and other input.

Columnist Kathleen Parker really showed herself as a rapid Republican with her recent column saying she was not outraged by Bush illegally spying on Americans without warrants. First, she laughably says we were saved from Iyman Faris destroying the Brooklyn Bridge because of these illegal wiretaps. Even Republican partisan Bob Barr, who led the fight to impeach Bill Clinton, scoffed at Faris who wanted to destroy the Bridge with, get this, blowtorches. In the months it would have taken to destroy it with blowtorches, it would have been too inconvenient for NSA to get warrants? Second, she says it would have been imprudent to have to get so many warrants. Yet, Team Bush has told us this illegal spying was very limited in scope. If the program was really that limited, I'm sure that the FISA court could have handled those few extra warrant requests. The real reason for these outrageous wiretaps is that our president thinks he is above the Constitutional checks and balances conceived by our Founding Founders. If anybody thinks that if the president had been named Clinton, not Bush, that Parker would be similarly unconcerned, I have a certain bridge to sell you. <<<<
