O'Reilly: Letterman is a Smart Guy Who Can Spot a Phony

In 2001 O'Reilly wrote an article that said this, Letterman is a smart guy who can spot a phony with telescopic accuracy. I wonder if O'Reilly would make that same statement today, probably not.

The Letterman experience

By Bill O'Reilly

Tuesday, February 27, 2001

The late-night program hosted by David Letterman is the toughest interview show on television.

That's because Mr. Letterman is a smart guy who can spot a phony with telescopic accuracy and expects his guests to bring something to the table. If a guest begins to sink on this show, the bottom is a long way down.

A big part of doing well on the Letterman show is the audience. A guest not only has to win over the host, but also the people who are sitting a few yards away. It is not a tough crowd, most are happy to be seeing Dave in person, but they are listening. And you better have something to say.

C & L has a partial video of the interview, it's not the whole interview but it's the part where he says 60% of what O'Reilly says is crap.

So clearly Letterman has spotted a phony, because he was not buying anything O'Reilly said.

8. No it's 99 Percent........
Edited on Wed Jan-04-06 03:45 PM by stewert
I started oreilly-sucks.com in august of 2001, so I think I am qualified to say it's about 99 percent crap. Letterman was clearly lowballing him, the reality is almost everything O'Reilly says is crap.

Almost nothing he says is accurate, just about everything he reports on is either spin or a flat out lie.

30. Yes it was QUITE an interview. Dave was pissed!!!!
His face was stressed. You could almost see the veins popping out. I had the feeling he wanted to floor O'Lielly every other comment.

Letterman was in his element and he was TOTALLLLLLLLLLLY AWESOME!!

22. I couldn't believe O'Lielly launched right into his....
"Christmas under attack" routine last night with Letterman! What a transparent bunch of hooey! I could only cheer out loud when Letterman responded with "I don't believe you."

O'Reilly makes all these claims about the supression of Christmas tradition. Meanwhile, I have had at least one of my three kids in our local public elementary school during the last ten years and every year the CHRISTMAS sing-a-long has been mostly traditional songs about Jesus. (They do throw in a catchy little medley with a couple of token verses of "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel....")

These RW mouthpieces cherry-pick their examples to fit their agenda. Even if it is true that one school district somewhere in the country discouraged wearing red and green (highly unlikely), what about the other hundreds or thousands of schools that required their students, regardless of religious background, to sing songs about Jesus?

These people have no shame. The outrageous claims are why he gets ratings. Hes a punch line and people tune in to see the train wreck . Im just glad he thinks people take him seriously. It makes him much funnier.

24. Well, O'Reilly IS laughable....
He was on some program and I called Mr. Zookeeper in to see him. At first, Mr. Zookeeper said he didn't want to watch another talking head, but after a few minutes he was amazed and fascinated with O'Reilly's pathological lying. "Train wreck" is a truly apt description!

28. O'Reilly
It was great! I just happened to tune in at the right time and heard Letterman say the bit about 60% crap (and he didn't pull back afterwards). O'Reilly sat there with a poker face and said something about how Letterman should respect his viewpoints even if he doesn't agree with them. Ha! Just like he is so respectful of the viewpoints of Democrats or Liberals.
It was great to see him put in his place and not be able to bully his way out of it. After he left, Letterman was very funny when he said he thought the cat was going to call 911 during the interview.

29. Interesting...
I saw the show, and I saw O'Reilly tonight, where he showed all the highlights (incuding the "60%" sequence).
O'Reilly is still defending Letterman and still defending his own positions.

I do watch O'Reilly occasionally, and while I find many of his positions wrong, and many of his antics embarassing, I don't share your disdain. For one thing, O'Reilly goes out of his way to look out for children, and I think he genuinely cares for the troops.

In the particular case of the Letterman show, I was disappointed more in Letterman. He gave almost no facts to back up his opinions, and kept admitting that he didn't know what he was talking about. Was that supposed to be tongue-in-cheek? He came off like an opinionated...

Go ahead, flame away!

I loved how his chin quivered the whole time he was getting what he so likes to give to guests on his show. He doesn't back his opinions on facts - he manufactures them, & then spins like a top!

But thanks for the laugh, anyway!

34. Welcome, Osito
No flames here. You're much more charitible toward O'Leilly than most people here are inclined to be (including my own bad self).

I respect your point of view. But I think Falafal Boy's concern about the troops is transparent and mercenary at best. I have no knowledge at all regarding how he looks out for kids. But I think his "crusade" to "protect Christmas" is a red herring, and he brings kids and their innocent holiday celebrations into it to try and gain some traction with soccer moms and church ladies.

Just my POV. Flame away.

Again, welcome.

35. No Flames, Osito -- but I do believe that Fallafel Man doesn't care about
the troups nearly so much as he knows he can invoke their image to his and bushco's advantage. He's so twisted up (at least in his public persona) that I don't even see him as someone who "cares" about kids, troops, or anything. Rather, he kows what will rouse his listeners. I bet * could propose some really heartless anti-kid programs and BO (along with most of NASCAR Nation) would fall right in line behind him.

36. I Agree - Letterman Wasn't So Hot
Although it was a great "burn" that he didn't even watch O'Reilly factor, if he wanted to show he was truly prepared, he should have had at least a few examples to back up his statement and give it credibility. Instead, Letterman only reinforces some of the negative misconceptions about Liberals.

The rest of it seemed pretty good, calling him on the whole Christmas thing and I LOVED the line about O'Reilly not being able to speak for Sheehan. I wonder why Letterman didn't challenge him on the part about Sheehan calling insurgents "Freedom Fighters" - I don't have time to research that right now, but I bet O'Reilly was quoting her out of context.

BTW - I read part of the O'Reilly Factor book and thought some of it made sense, but I just couldn't finish it, I found the tone too smug and condescending.

38. Letterman acted more like a journalist than reporters do
Our media is in a sad state when we have to search for the news on talk-shows and comedy-shows. Finally, someone on TV confronted Fal-boy on his hypocrisy.

People are criticizing Letterman for his lack of preparation arguing that he should have been more prepared by watching his shows. I disagree. Fal-boy's responds to any argument by asking for specifics, it is an old debate strategy. Come-on any one who watches his show can see his lies and distortions. He is a good debater and Letterman admitted that he is not, but that he knows BS when he smells it.

I am reminded of the difference between this interview and the interview with Fal-boy on the Today show with Couric. It was pathetic rubber stamping of his insane arguments and biased view points.

The emperor has no clothes. Someone on TV finally voiced it.
