How did the Democratic party get my e-mail address?
I'm in Oregon, a registered Independent, and have never given money to any political party or candidante of any persuasion. I have given money to DU, but never any candidates. I have signed petitions along the way for causes I support, but have not given to any PACs or NPOs in a long time. I'm terribly in debt from starting a business, and have not been in a position to give for quite some time.

So, the question remains, who's been passing around my e-mail address?

I get e-mails from the Democratic Party of Oregon, John Kerry, and a few other Oregon-based Democratic PACs.

Anyone have any experience with how the Dems organize their databases? If you sign a petition do they automatically log you in for life?

I don't really mind, because I don't consider it spam, but I'm perplexed as to how I got into the system.

3. Active recruiting
The same thing happened to me. Well meaning friends who believe me to be a "closet Democrat" (fair assessment) signed me up in spite of my regular rantings against the party "line" (read "actions speak louder than words").

5. So NPOs and PACs give your address to the party?
Isn't there some sort of implied privacy there?

I know that once you give to any enviro organization you'll start getting solicitations from the rest. I guess you're just fair game once you give it to anyone at all.

:(

8. Depends on who's sponsoring the petition, I suppose.
When I sign some, I notice I start getting e-mails from affiliated groups.

2. Did you ever log into the official website of the Democratic party?
To get a login account you give them your email address...at least that's how it used to work.

6. Ever sign one of Kerry's petitions?
When you say you sign petitions, do you mean paper, or online? Do you supply emails with those? Maybe the various orgs are selling emails, but I dunno.
