Do the citizens of South Dakota care?
Edited on Thu Feb-23-06 06:57 PM by frogbison
I went to the South Dakota folder and found not a single discussion of their senate and legislators, the huge, nation-influencing steps their government, right now, is taking to restrict women's right to control their own bodies. Read this, from the Minneapolis Star/Tribune: http://www.startribune.com/484/story/264010.html

"In response, Sen. William Napoli, R-Rapid City, noted that advocates of a ban have been characterized as extremists. "We're having this discussion because we want to save lives," he said softly, as people in the packed galleries strained to hear. "We are being as honest and straightforward as can be. It just says, 'No more abortions.'

"Am I an extremist because I believe a woman shouldn't abort a baby because she can't afford it, which is the majority of abortions?"

Can anyone from South Dakota tell me how Senator Napoli is helping or hurting the effort to take care of these babies that the women can't afford? It angers me when people talk like this and then cut funding for the poor.

Edited for typo.

1. I'm sure many in SD do care, of course probably not many
South Dakotans on DU. But I'm also sure that in a conservative state like SD that the majority probably support this.

3. I just LOVE their argument that
MILLIONS of couples are waiting to adopt these babies. Is that why we used to have ORPHANAGES because so many wanted to ADOPT? Besides, welcome to the 21st Century. We now have fertility treatments that were unavailable back in the 1930s. Nevermind the fact that NOW most couples do not WANT 5+ children anymore.

It is a disgusting turn of events but then I don't expect anything else these days.

7. even crisis pregnancy centers don't offer pre-natal care.
They just give diapers, formula and maybe clothes once they've talked a woman in to keeping the child.

8. My SD Relatives are all for this law. They have been for many years.
Quite frankly, they've obsessed with abortion for at least 25 years that I know of. They get whipped up by their church leaders (Roman Catholic) and go out and march, even get chained to the doors of clinics. Oh, and it helps them avoid thinking an dealing with other things.

It's really way bizarre.

And one of them was the mother of 11, who suffered such extreme post-partum depression after every child that she could not be left alone with them and her mother moved in to help raise the children. But according to the religion, that was her fate.

In her case, I think her extreme anti-choice activism had to do with her suffering being so severe for so many years, that it would have no meaning if it could all have been prevented (by birth control or abortion).

As for the others, they're way too deep under the spell of a misogynistic religion.

I really don't know why I figured it out and so many of my relatives didn't.

10. Here's a bit of irony....
My friend, back in the late 60s / early 70s, had to cross the state line from "liberal" Minnesota to South Dakota - she was 16 at the time - to get an abortion. When fortune and maturity were hers, she bore two children, raised them to responsible adulthood.

11. I've been watching CNN for a few hours to see if this would get mentioned
I haven't heard anything about it so far. The media is so "one track minded" so to speak. All ports coverage, nothing about SD.
