South Dakota law to ban all abortions.
Here it comes folks, the end of Roe v. Wade.

I would not be surprised if the Supremes rule that every fertilized egg is a full person entitled to full constitutional rights.

Keep your coat hangers folks.

South Dakota Approves Bill Outlawing Nearly All Abortions

PIERRE, S.D., Feb. 22 —The South Dakota Senate today approved a bill that would outlaw nearly all abortions in the state, a measure that could become the most sweeping ban approved by a state in more than a decade.

If the bill is signed by Gov. Michael Rounds, a Republican who opposes abortion, advocates of abortion rights have pledged to challenge it in court immediately — and that is precisely what the bill's supporters have in mind.

The bill passed by a vote of 23 to 12 after opponents tried unsuccessfully to attach amendments that would have created exceptions for cases of rape and incest and that would have blocked spending of state money to defend against the court challenge that is sure to come.

Before it reaches the governor's desk, a slightly reworded version of the bill — one that does not change its overall meaning — has to be sent back to the House, where the bill was overwhelmingly approved earlier...

4. Here's the link. But there seems to be another thread on this topic.
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/22/national/22cnd-dakota.html

I didn't see it and defer to that thread.

5. That was way too fast--I think it was planned--
It only stands to reason--why right now? Bush got Alito on the SCOTUS and right away, an abortion case heading toward the court?

I think it was probably pre-arranged--the White House probably made a deal with South Dakota legislators to wait until after the nomination so they could ram this through without a fight. It might be interesting to follow the money on this one (if there is any) and see if there is a tenable connection...

What a mess...

8. Doesn't need to be money or a conspiracy
From the standpoint of someone who wants to deny reproductive rights, it's smart politics. The right-wing South Dakota legislators serve their own self-interest by holding off for a while and minimizing the controversy until Alito gets appointed.

11. Of course it was remember
that Bush does everything either on the lowdown (such as with Bolton and other appointies) or really quickly to avoid a fight because they control everything.

6. What's next unrepeal Prohibition? Restore slavery?
The rights of free women in America are officially being haggled over by narrowminded men.

9. This is such a red herring
Keep your eye on the partial birth abortion case. It's a far bigger threat to what remains of the integrity of post Casey Roe. I actually believe it's far more likely that Roe will simply be hollowed out by the SC rather than overturned. And in many ways that's a scarier prospect.

10. true. Kennedy will vote to outlaw late term abortions, whereas he wouldn't
vote for the SD law (my opinion based on his previous votes)

12. Exactly, and once they let that law stand
it opens the door to more restrictions on the state level, and possibly more restrictions on the federal level.

13. Let's mail them some coathangers. Let's asking them if
having a period is killing a person because the egg slips out unfertilized.
