What if our Democracy fails? What if they're forced to live under a true police state? What skills would they need. Would we want them to go along in order to survive or seek to resist and restore the nation to Freedom, Laws and Democracy? Would it be most wise to be sure to teach them what America was meant to be? To make sure they know the meaning of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. If we do that alone, they'll never be satisfied living under a totalitarian regime... if that's the case do they need to be able to defend/fight for their beliefs?
Can we afford to assume that such a thing could never happen here? After all, I once thought that an actual Coup d'etat to usurp the proper President of the United States could never happen here. It may have been subtle, done via electronic voting (blackbox voting), cheating (voter disenfranchisement), criminally misleading ballots (butterfly ballots) and malfunctioning punch card voting machines (hanging chads) legal wrangling (to avoid proper recounts) and a partisan Supreme Court (that took the election out of the hands of the people and voted along party lines), but done, it was.
What to do, what to do... If it happened to us, we could, with difficulty determine our own course of action and involvement... We might have to learn many new things and risk our lives in ways we've never imagined outside of watching television or movies... but to decide on orienting the next generations and providing for them the basis for potential resistance is even harder.
In less than nine months, we'll learn alot more about what's going to be our future--but we still haven't even been able to ensure fair elections! Despite the incredible bumbling of the opposing party, we don't seem to be in a competitive position in most places around the country... Yet, if we don't win in more places than we have a right to expect to... the corruption that's taken hold in our government will be all the more firmly entrenched by the 2008 elections. We don't even have access to small fraction of "fair and balanced" coverage in the media--and to win, we're going to need that. So, facing manipulated voting systems, unable to use the available political capital while still unable to even get our message to the people... things are not looking up...
Doom and gloom; but somehow truth will win the day? Somehow? Why are we the eternal optimists? Our faith in our fellow human beings should, by now, be all but destroyed given the abusive, all-out-war like approach to politics and the inestimable damage/harm the other side has already accomplished... Still, we hope. Perhaps it's just that things overall haven't yet gotten bad enough? Not to worry, we can't forestall total economic collapse for too many more years. Suffering is good for the soul (yeah, sure it is)--true or not, it will get people's thinking straightened out somewhat!
