2. OK I saw it and all I can say is "how much does the bush crime
family" pay them to promote their BULLSHIT..Apparently they are staunch GOP. For this is the second time (1st was 911) where they ardently support the government. I saw more dis-information and Bullshit then i can bear.
Hell even Bob Barh was against the powers of Bigger Brother and I understand he voted for the unpatriot act.
Penn attempted to make me (us) believe our NSA,CIFA,FBI,CIA,DHS and others are inept and incapable of spying on us..Wrong penn, its who they will select for spying. I too agree it would be impossible to spy on everyone
at the same time but in fact they cant and wont since they have many gopers/freepers who wont be spied upon.
PENN AND TELLER SHOULD STICK TO THEIR MAGIC ACTS AND KEEP OUT OF POLITICS..

3. Penn seems to fancy himself a Liberterian.
That's secret code for "a Republican who smokes pot."

4. Penn does not smoke or drink or do drugs of any kind.
He's a libertarian (small l) not a Libertarian. There's a big difference.

6. Here it is from the dictionary...
Edited on Thu Feb-16-06 10:56 PM by IMModerate
libertarian: 1 : an advocate of the doctrine of free will
2 a : a person who upholds the principles of absolute and unrestricted liberty especially of thought and action

b capitalized : a member of a political party advocating libertarian principles

Most Libertarians are really freeps who are atheists or dopers.

Interestingly Noam Chomsky describes himself as a libertarian socialist.

Small l libertarians advocate being left alone in their private lives. Coincidentally this was that subject of a thread recently. I couldn't find it though.

On edit: I found it. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=364&topic_id=409239

8. Sorry, but I find that a non-distinction.
"A member of a political party advocating libertarian principles..."? Po-tay-to, po-tah-to.

9. The Libertarian party is full of freeps.
Edited on Thu Feb-16-06 11:09 PM by IMModerate
They are mostly against the idea of taxation. They advocate small government, etc. They promote freedom for corporations, and laissez-faire capitalism. Many are brought in by Ayn Rand.

Many of us who think of ourselves as libertarians (generic) are progressive. We eschew government control over our private lives. We support freedom of choice in all matters for individuals (people.) There is surely a difference whether you recognize it or not.

11. How true
There are a bunch of them on internet discussion boards. And they are obnoxious. One told me after Katrina that when his area had a bad ice storm, he didn't get mad when FEMA didn't come help him. I was just stunned - he actually believed an ice storm was as bad as a friggin hurricane. And he thought he deserved some kind of medal for being so self-sufficient.

12. I saw a posting like that.
It's about one of the Northwestern states, how the neighbors helped each other and didn't rely on government assistance. Then I saw it debunked and it turns out the government sent in food and emergency heating oil etc. This could be part of that same fantasy.

Turns out the guy is disabled and pissed off that his SSI check isn't big enough to allow him to sit on his ass and not have to work at all. And he wants an operation that Medicaid won't pay for. The day after he posted the crap about his ice storm, he started a thread to rave about how he was getting screwed by govt social programs.

18. You make strong claims about P&T and politics....
... so the onus is on you to prove them by providing supporting links.

Penn has called himself a Libertarian in the past: I'd be interested in evidence that he and Teller are "staunch GOP" as you claim.

I'm open to changing my opinion of them, given evidence (we skeptics usually ask for that).

20. They used David Horowitz as an "expert" on liberal control
of universities in a show about "College". Whorowitz was unopposed. This was the same show where they had on Chomsky, and cut him off to mock him. "What the fuck is this loon saying?" It was a total Right Wing propaganda piece.

Found my old thread from 2005...

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=3754699

Penn; "And which polictial party? It certainly ain't the Libertarians, the Whigs, or the corn-sucking Uncle Tom Party. Who does THAT leave?"<smirk>
Dan Flynn (author; Intellectual Morons)..." A lot of universities have served as a sort of trianing ground for leftists"
Penn..."NOOOOO! According to Dan and a shitload of statistics, American Academia is run by the Democratic Party."

That came from an "expert" on college diversity who wrote the book..."Why the Left Hates America."

They've bagged recycling, upchucked naturally grown food, imploded 9/11 questions, the list goes on, and that's just on Bullshit! For every Feng Shui, bottled water, circumcision, or creationism show they do, they do at least 2 hate the Democrats shows.

22. Thanks. I've seen some their skeptical material on "Bullshit!"...
... (it doesn't air in Canada, one has to go find it), but not what you call their "hate the Democrats shows". I'll have to go look for those shows and decide for myself.

I must confess that I am more a fan of skepticism than partisanism. If they genuinely skewer "Democrats" for doing something stupid (a la Feng Shui), then I wholeheartedly support them. If they are just being partisan jerks, then screw them.

17. "Big puke supporters"? WTF? I think they are...
... more like non-partisan bullshit-callers and avowed skeptics (which I respect).

Sure, Penn has been harsh on Chomsky in this instance, but P&T have also declaimed "The P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act": Penn & Teller: The Patriot Act is Bullshit and Penn covered the 1992 Republican Convention for Comedy Central (while declaring himself to be Libertarian at the time).

Teller probably had no comment.

Randi loves them too.

I personally consider "Libertarians" to be extremly selfish pricks who have no compassion for the less-well-off, but that doesn't make them "pukes" in my book. Maybe you have a different book. Mine is an Etch-a-Sketch(tm) and gets re-written as science discovers more things.

If you can back up your claim that P&T are Republicans, I'll shake my Etch-a-Sketch(tm).

26. truthiness in action
If they say it enough times it must be true.

I got rid of showtime a year ago but used to watch them regularly. I do not agree with all of their politics but I would never call them RW.

27. Some people can't tolerate anyone that shares 1 view different from them.
That being said, I don't agree with everything Penn and Teller say, but I still like them.

I'm sure they wouldn't agree with everything I say either. Hell, I'm sure there are many things I'd get called names for around here, because I don't blindly go lock-step with the herd.
