EU, UN urge US to close Guantanamo

BRUSSELS: The European Parliament and United Nations urged the United States on Thursday to close the Guantanamo Bay detention centre and give a fair trial to all prisoners.

EU member states are not obliged to back the symbolic call, which adds to mounting international pressure on Washington to close the camp. On Thursday United Nations investigators said detainees there faced treatment amounting to torture. In its resolution, the European Parliament said “every prisoner should be treated in accordance with international humanitarian law and tried without delay in a fair and public hearing by a competent, independent, impartial tribunal.” The resolution was adopted by 80 votes in favour, 1 against, and 1 abstention.

“When will exactly this nightmare end?” asked Graham Watson, leader of the liberal grouping in parliament. “Guantanamo has become a byword for all that is wrong with the US response with terrorism today.” In a 40-page report, which had been largely leaked, five UN special envoys said on Thursday the United States was violating a host of human rights, including a ban on torture, arbitrary detention and the right to a fair trial. The report is likely to fuel new Arab anger over the treatment of Iraqi inmates at Baghdad’s US-run Abu Ghraib prison after Australian TV broadcast more images of abuse there.

1. We're trying...........
I hope folks in the EU truly understand that there is a very vocal, organized opposition in this country. However our leaders are hamstringing us at every turn.

3. I hope those outside America understand that in America, anyone
who disagrees with the Bush administration is ignored, marginalized, or ridiculed. MANY Americans don't like the Bush administration and the shame that Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo have brought on our country. Please keep insisting that Gitmo and Abu Ghraib be closed. They don't listen to us here at home.

4. So why don't they offer Castro some incentive and
backup to kick us out. It would probably start a war but, oh well, we are already starting wars all over the place, why not one with Cuba and the EU?
