President Bush’s speeches have come to have no meaning

Editor:
On January 31, President Bush gave his State of the Union address. Among the issues he touched on, he said we were addicted to oil and had to break the habit. On February 1, (less than 24 hours later) Bush administration officials told us this was not be taken literally, it was only placed in terms which the American people could understand. Bush didn’t really mean we had to break the oil habit. It was a figure of speech? Not to be taken literally?

This week, Bush gave a speech in L.A. (presumably to defend the domestic spying program), he cited a 2002 plot to fly a plane into buildings in L.A., went into more detail than usual and told of how the plot was stopped. The former and present mayors of L.A. stated they didn’t even know about the plot. Mayor Villaraigosa had requested meetings with Bush in the past to discuss Homeland Security issues and as of yet there has been no meetings. However, Homeland Security officials said Bush was only giving a speech and that there was no direct threat to Los Angeles at present. Just another figure of speech? Not to be taken literally?

We seem to be entering a variation of spin. Previously, when Bush has been questioned on the “truthfulness” of his statements, they have been quick to cover it up by saying “the President mispoke.” Now the spin is “it wasn’t meant to be taken literally.” Just a metaphor, figure of speech, a hypothetical scenario, random musings.

Does this mean when Bush said Iraq had WMDs, and Rumsfeld said he knew exactly where they were, that they didn’t mean it literally? Another metaphor, figure of speech, a hypothetical scenario, random musings?

What about the Axis of Evil list? Metaphor, figure of speech, a hypothetical scenario, random musings? Trickle-Down economics? Metaphor, figure of speech, a hypothetical scenario, random musings?

How about his statements regarding “not knowing Ken Lay or Jack Abramoff?” Metaphor, figure of speech, a hypothetical scenario, random musings?

We’ve been told since the 2000 campaign, that Bush is a straight-shooter. Was that also just a metaphor, figure of speech, a hypothetical scenario, random musings?

Perhaps the media should be running a disclaimer when broadcasting a Bush Speech. Warning: Not to be taken literally. Or perhaps the press corps, when questioning Bush or designated spokespeople should ask, “Can we take that literally? Or is it just a metaphor, figure of speech, a hypothetical scenario, random musings?”

A frightening hypothetical scenario to consider: When Bush took the oath of office and swore to defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States, did he mean it metaphorically and not to be taken literally?

I vote for random musings.

Great job! :applause:

4. Very good!
Nail, meet hammer. Planting the seeds of doubt in the American public's fallow fields of the mind. You almost have to club people over the head now-days to get them to understand the extent they're being lied to by bush. You've done that very well. :yourock:

7. Your LTTE is a fist right smack in the eye of the bush administration.
Excellent. One of the best letters to the editor I've ever read. It reads like a short story, with a real punch of an ending line.

9-11 was a failure of imagination :eyes:

Katrina was a failure of initiative

I find this strange and it should be used in our favor.

13. Congrats. Great letter!
Just a suggestion. I used the media lists in the resource section of DU to develop a mailing list to spread these sort of letters far and wide. Some outlets have replied that they only accept letters from locals but I haven't let that stop me. Once a week I send them something. Would you mind if I use this for next weeks blitz? The way that I figure the more ltte's they get from our point of view the harder they will be to ignore or sweep under the rug. Keep up the great work!

14. you sure can use it
I e-mailed blasted my friends with it and suggested they do the same

the more the merrier...

one question though - if the bushies come knocking at my door - do I hide behind executive priviledge, national security or just tell them I don't have a press person with me?

17. Blame me.
I am getting harder to find. A few nights here, a few nights there. Plus they don't want me. I know enough to be dangerous. From here on out let me be your press aide. I will shuffle the responsibility down to another lackey just like they do. Any volunteers for that job?

21. I had an LTTE published in The Hill
Let the ‘loose cannons’ fire in next battle

Such a curious statement, that Veterans for a Secure America candidates “flout the unwritten rules of modern politicking.”

I don’t know if the Democrats, named and unnamed, cited by Savodnick have noticed, but modern politicking hasn’t served the Democratic Party very well these past five years. It’s served the nation even less.

Bring on the truth-tellers and the loose cannons. Let your timid Democrats quake in their boots along with the worried Republicans. I am so proud of the men and women I watched on C-SPAN as they enter a new battle in service to our country.

22. good letter!
keep their feet to the flames

there's an anti-incumbency mood building -- and if Dems want to make some headway for mid-terms they will have to stand up and turn on the heat

and this means WE THE PEOPLE have to keep stoking the fires
