Dean Statement Supporting Sherrod Brown

Forwarded by the Ohio Democratic Party today

Dean Statement on the Ohio Senate Race

Washington, DC- Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean today issued the following statement supporting Congressman Sherrod Brown's Senate campaign:

"I admire Paul Hackett, he's done a lot for the country and stood up for America and our democratic values. I consider him a great friend and I sincerely hope he will remain active in Democratic politics. The Democratic Party was very lucky to have two outstanding candidates in the race for Senate in Ohio.

"Now that the possibility of a bitter primary that inadvertently benefits a Republican incumbent is behind us, I want to urge everyone to come together in support of Sherrod Brown. Everyone who knows Sherrod knows that he has been a strong advocate for Ohio's working families in Congress, and will continue to stand up for them in the U.S. Senate. Ohio voters also know that they can count on Sherrod Brown to fight the Republican culture of corruption that Mike DeWine is a part of, and refocus our government on creating jobs that stay in Ohio, improving access to health care for all Americans, and promoting a strong public education system that restores opportunity and optimism."

The DSCC did it damage. Worse, thye made it obvious how toothless DEan is. It isn't Dean's fault but the DNC doesn't mean anything. Nor does DNC Chair. That is why it doesn't make a difference who is DNC Chair. And all the hollering was for nothing. That is why it was okay with everyone that Dean BE chair. It was meaningless appeasement of those who thought they were disenfranchised. They can't dictate policy. I thought they were supposed to influence campaign stratgy though. Guess not.

Admittedly, I didn't become as invested in the Brown v. Hackett fight that's been raging in recent weeks, but this is the ugly nature of two-party politics. Because you only have one "microphone" and two candidates, there's going to be a fight.

If we step back further, we see that, again, there is one party or one "microphone," yet there are several different groups fighting each other for control of that one microphone. I wish we had electoral reform and adopted something like proportional representation or a mixed system. That way, various groups on the left wouldn't be pitted against each other for power. They'd negotiate on their own terms with each other instead.

With Brown v. Hackett, if we had IRV (instant run-off voting), then it wouldn't have mattered if both Brown and Hackett ran, but we don't have that for congressional races. Even if Hackett didn't win in the first round, it wouldn't hurt Brown in the end because many Democrats and independents would've chosen the sure bet (Brown) if their first pick (i.e. Hackett) didn't make it. Polling results showed Brown is ahead anyway.
