Cheney implicated in leak of CIA operative's identiy (New News)
Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 01:22 AM by lovuian

http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=c65b2484511e0a1b

Vice President Dick Cheney and then-Deputy National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley led a campaign beginning in March 2003 to discredit former Ambassador Joseph Wilson for publicly criticizing the Bush administration's intelligence on Iraq, according to current and former administration officials.

The officials work or had worked in the State Department, the CIA and the National Security Council in a senior capacity and had direct knowledge of the Vice President's campaign to discredit Wilson.

In interviews over the course of two days last week, these officials were urged to speak on the record for this story. But they resisted, saying they had already testified before a grand jury investigating the leak of Wilson's wife, covert CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson, and added that speaking out against the administration and specifically Vice President Cheney would cause them to lose their jobs and subject their families to vitriolic attacks by the White House.

The officials said they decided to speak out now because they have become disillusioned with the Bush administration's policies regarding Iraq and the flawed intelligence that led to the war.

They said their roles, along with several others at the CIA and State Department, included digging up or "inventing" embarrassing information on the former Ambassador that could be used against him, preparing memos and classified material on Wilson for Cheney and the National Security Council, and attending meetings in Cheney's office to discuss with Cheney, Hadley, and others the efforts that would be taken to discredit Wilson.

Is Tenet coming out and spilling the whole beans about Cheney...??? WHOAH!!!

60. Let's hope so.
I just can't imagine what our representatives are waiting for. Surely they know more about all this criminal activity than we do (and if not, they should be forced to step down and take a job requiring the use of the phrase 'Would you like fries with that?') How many more laws will have to be broken before they recognize the foul stench emanating from the oval office? What will it take to get these people to do the right thing?

Enough of the status quo, the hand wringing and the second guessing already. Even if you can't muster the votes to get the results you want, even if you are concerned you won't get re-elected, TAKE A FUCKING STAND and show us you care about the future of this Country!! Impeach these filthy bastards and run them out of town on a rail!

Now the Reicht will bring back the "get over it" defense or the "no new ideas" one.

25. I wonder what was in Albright's binder...
"The officials said a "binder" was sent to the Vice President's office that contained material that could be used by the White House to discredit Albright if he continued to comment on the administration's war plans. However, it's unclear whether Cheney or other White House officials used the information against Albright."

from the article

Who is David Albright
http://www.isis-online.org/about/staff/dalbright.html
David Albright, a physicist, is President of the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) in Washington, D.C. He directs the project work of ISIS, heads its fundraising efforts, and chairs its board of directors. In addition, he regularly publishes and conducts scientific research. He has written numerous assessments on secret nuclear weapons programs throughout the world.

Albright has published assessments in Science, Scientific American, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Arms Control Today, The Washington Post, Newsday, The New York Times, The Public Interest Report, and Forum for Applied Research and Public Policy. Research reports by Albright have been published by the Environmental Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. and Princeton University's Center for Energy and Environmental Studies.

Albright, in collaboration with Frans Berkhout, of Sussex University, and William Walker, of the University of St. Andrews, published World Inventory of Plutonium and Highly Enriched Uranium, 1992 (SIPRI and Oxford University Press). A second, greatly-expanded edition entitled Plutonium and Highly Enriched Uranium 1996: World Inventories, Capabilities and Policies was published in March 1997. He is also a co-editor and contributor to Challenges of Fissile Material Control and Solving the North Korean Nuclear Puzzle, published by ISIS Press in 1999 and 2000, respectively.

Albright cooperated actively with the IAEA Action Team from 1992 until 1997, focusing on analyses of Iraqi documents and past procurement activities. In June 1996, he was the first non-governmental inspector of the Iraqi nuclear program. On this inspection mission, Albright questioned members of Iraq's former uranium enrichment programs about their statements in Iraq's draft Full, Final, and Complete Declaration.

He received a 1992 Olive Branch Award for a series of articles he wrote, along with Mark Hibbs, on the Iraqi nuclear weapons program for the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. He is also a Bulletin contributing editor and has been a guest editor of special editions of the magazine.

Albright has testified many times on nuclear issues before the U.S. Congress. He has spoken to many groups, technical workshops and conferences, briefed government decision- makers, and trained many government officials in non-proliferation policy making.

From 1990 to 2001, Albright was a member of the Health Advisory Panel appointed by Colorado Governor Roy Romer. The Panel, responsible to the state's Health Department, oversees a historical assessment of the toxicological and radiological doses received by the population near the Rocky Flats nuclear weapons production site. On this panel, Albright oversees the development of 'source' terms, which describe the type and amount of dangerous materials that left the plant during daily releases, accidents, or large-scale fires.

In 1996, Albright was appointed to the Department of Energy Openness Advisory Panel, which operates under the auspices of the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board. The panel is charged with reviewing the Department's Openness policy, which was started in 1993, with the aim of lifting the veil of Cold War secrecy that has surrounded many of the DOE's activities without jeopardizing national security.

Prior to founding ISIS, he worked as a Senior Staff Scientist at the Federation of American Scientists and as a member of the research staff of Princeton University's Center for Energy and Environmental Studies. In the early 1980s, he taught physics at George Mason University in Virginia. He has served as a consultant or contractor to the Environmental Policy Institute, the Congressional Research Service, the International Task Force on Prevention of Nuclear Terrorism, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Albright holds a Masters of Science in physics from Indiana University and a Masters of Science in mathematics from Wright State University.

no wonder Bush & Cheney don't like scientist...

43. Begs questions on 9-11 and NSA investigation of funding being spiked
Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 03:56 PM by EVDebs
prior to 9-11 and the links to Saudis during 9-11

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2459241

By 'spiking' the NSA's money investigation, did Bush prevent NSA from preventing 9-11 ? And with the domestic wiretapping happening PRIOR to 9-11, did the NSA get forced into spying on Americans who might put two and two together regarding 9-11, Iraq, and now Iran ? Domestic spying not on 'terrorists' but Bush's political enemies here in the states ?

This is where we're going, and being stonewalled all the way. Bush = Nixon. This directly relates to post #25

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=411055&mesg_id=411481

and at the original story mentioning Albright:

""During the same CNN segment in which Wilson was interviewed, former United Nations weapons inspector David Albright made similar comments about the rationale for the Iraq war and added that he believed UN weapons inspectors should be given more time to search the country for weapons of mass destruction. The National Security Council and CIA officials said Cheney had visited CIA headquarters and asked several CIA officials to dig up dirt on Albright, and to put together a dossier that would discredit his work that could be distributed to the media.

"Vice President Cheney was more concerned with Mr. Albright," the CIA official said. "The international community had been saying that inspectors should have more time, that the US should not set a deadline. The Vice President felt Mr. Albright's remarks would fuel the debate."

The officials said a "binder" was sent to the Vice President's office that contained material that could be used by the White House to discredit Albright if he continued to comment on the administration's war plans. However, it's unclear whether Cheney or other White House officials used the information against Albright.""

http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=c65b2484511e0a1b

The 'stuff' in the binder could only have been compiled by NSA on Albright illegally. Albright and Plame should join in FOIA requests on the binder and demand to know where the warrant is and who signed it.

57. Cheney was not under oath when questioned by Fitzgerald.
I find that, in itself, interesting.

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, who has been investigating the Plame Wilson leak for more than two years, questioned Cheney about his role in the leak in 2004. Cheney did not testify under oath, and it's unknown what he told the special prosecutor.

This is an awesome article. The walls are coming down. There are multiple current and former senior officials spilling the beans to Fitzgerald. Holy cow.

59. Interesting paragraph, revealing Cheney's attitude.
"The way I remember it," the CIA official said about that first meeting he attended in Cheney's office, "is that the vice president was obsessed with Wilson. He called him an "asshole," a son-of-a-bitch. He took his comments very personally. He wanted us to do everything in our power to destroy his reputation and he wanted to be kept up to date about the progress."

What a Dick.
