the thread equates Bush voters with rednecks. An assumption that is not necessarily valid. For example, the people of the state of Arkansas have traditionally been viewed as hillbillies and rednecks. Yet, according to Bush job approval ratings by Survey USA, Arkansas is considerably more blue than the states surrounding it. Wonder where those liberal leanings come from? From the monied retirees, or the executives of Wally World, Tyson or Dillards? Or more likely from those hillbilly redneck residents of the state who barely earn enough money to survive? I was born, raised and graduated from high school in Arkansas. I was fortunate to leave and get a good education. I still know a lot of folks who live there - though the socio-economic issues clearly extend far beyond that state. Some of the folks I know there are dirt poor. Others are far more fortunate. I can vividly remember visiting in a poor home that had no electricity or indoor plumbing. I remember well how the only heat in that house was around the small wood burning stove. I also remember walking out to the outhouse in the dark and in the snow.

You find the pics funny because they are real and because, apparently, you can relate somewhat to the circumstances depicted. It is one thing to be able to find humor in your own situation and circumstances. It is quite another thing to use humor to belittle someone less fortunate. Really, aren't homeless folks the only ones entitled to make light of that tragic issue?

I, too, know well that those pics are real. And that is the very reason I find little humor in them.

I have a BA, and am a thesis short of a MA. Due to Hubby being laid off from WorldCom and now being on dialysis, we had to move to the country. We are "low income" (living on Hubby's disability), have a dead car in the driveway (ok, it is a '92 Mazda Miata, but it is still dead), and have a pet chicken in the dining room.

My friend, who has her MA, bought a house near Holister which is a fixer. She has a sunken bathtub because it fell through the floor and is gently resting on the ground under the house. Makes showering an exciting enterprise.

We can either mourn our situation or laugh. Laughter is much healthier.

My aunt and uncle have a brand new trailer, have lived in trailers since I was 3 and are worse off financially than I am. They don't have nice cars, the area around their house is total trash and makeshift barns and utterly disgusting. However, if they had the money to fix it all up, I doubt they would. Because they're rednecks and quite frankly, they're trashy.
Now, my husband and I barely get by, but we're okay financially. We live in an old trailer, and until we move, we take pride in calling ourselves 'trailer trash.' Are we trashy people? Some might think so but we don't. We just don't see the need to pretend to be high class while we live in a trailer. In a real house, I won't set the bag of garbage on the porch until tomorrow morning-in the trailer I do. In a real house, I won't ghetto rig speakers to my front porch and then leave the wires hanging from the rafters so we can crank up the stereo while we BBQ. If there are speakers outside, they'll be installed, rather than just placed outside. In the trailer? Ghetto rigged.
So, now, we fit the stereotype of trailer trash. And it's funny and we laugh about it.
My aunt and uncle? They fit the mold. Are they funny? Not so much, because they can't afford any better. If they could, and they still relished they're 'trailer trashy-ness' then it would be funny and we could all laugh together. They know they're not high class, and we'd laugh even harder if they tried to act like they were. And they'd be laughing the loudest!
