Kos:Taking the Hill:Great pics of the Veteran candidates"Fighting Dems"
Edited on Wed Feb-08-06 05:50 PM by cal04
(Cross-posted from the DNC Blog -- which, well, you all should be visiting anyway -- Tim)

This morning, forty Democratic candidates for U.S. Congress, all veterans gathered between the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument to tell the American people that this group of "Fighting Dems" was coming together to take "The Hill" ... again. They came together as part of a group who recognizes the current administration doesn't hesitate to stand infront of the troops when it comes to a photo-op, but never stands behind them when it comes to providing the armor necessary to fight in Iraq, or the benefits promised when they return home.

Kerry and Clark Coming TONIGHT!
Posted by DavidNYC

Today's Band of Brothers event on the mall was AMAZING. Sen. Cleland was absolutely inspiring. And it was just tremendous to see so many Fighting Dems arrayed together. I'll have some pictures later.

But I also wanted to tell you some very exciting news: Two more veterans are coming to tonight's fundraiser at the Frederick Douglass House. You may have heard of them: John Kerry and Wesley Clark. I'm tremendously excited. If you were wavering about coming, now you have no excuses! See you there!

24. So very sad
Don't cry

* Wes told us one of his famous anecdotal accounts. He was just in Florida visiting a Vets Hospital there and talking to some wounded patients. One National Guard gunner he spoke with was recovering from an IED explosion that killed the others in his Humvee. He had tubes coming out of him and "mesh" around the leg area.

As Wes was leaving, the coordinator came over and told him the guy was the latest to come in. "He's got nothing below the waist", he said, "was colostomized, can't have any kids and had no skin or muscles on his legs". Then the coordinator, probably sensing a caring heart in Wes, revealed; "I can't tell you how many of the families DON'T hold up Sir...the level of frustration and anger...some just leave and never come back. Some will come in once a month just to pick up the check and leave.."

Wes is devastated by these kinds of stories. It's just another unrecorded casualty of this war that is swept under the rug...the tearing apart of these young families who think they can endure only to discover how difficult it is... Wes wants us to try to help them.

Huge sigh....accompanied by random chills.

4. This is so fantastic. As many as 56 veterans running as
Dems for the House.

The "Band of Brothers" moniker is perfect. Sounds like we have finally learned some lessons about promoting our "product".

5. Fighting Dems is such a great idea...
Sam Seder, on his radio show, The Majority Report, has interviewed many of them, and he always starts off with this question:

Why are you a Democrat?

Great question, no?

I think only one Veteran who is running in an election this year is a Repug, the rest are all Dems!

8. anyone seen a transcript
or release of what Mr. Cleland had to say?

At the convention in boston a young German tourist asked me "who the man the man in the wheelchair was" (He was appearing with Doris Goodwin Kearns on MSNBC or such) I told the whole Saxby Chambliss story, it amazed him. It was difficult to understand and even more difficult to explain.

12. They can cover Rove speeches but none from Dem vet candidates
and Dem leaders like Kerry, Clark and Cleland.

Nope. BushInc draws the line at covering events that show Dems are more connected to and understand better the matters concerning the military.

10. Chris Carney, who is running for the house in PA-10 was there
I'm hoping that he is going to be a Dem pickup since he's going up against known adulterer/accused mistress beater Don Sherwood. Some think he's bit of a moderate but if this guy is out there defending Murtha let's hope that when he gets to DC that he'll align with Murtha when it comes to this horrible war!

15. They should tour
They should tour the country, showing up at important races to speak for other Dems.

I know they need to stay in their own district, but quite a few of them are not going to lose.

That would be sweet, I would love to see them out here.

25. the interesting thing about candidates who have served in war . . .
is that they are the LEAST likely to vote for new wars or to continue meaningless wars . . . once you've seen war up close, you never want to see that happen to anyone ever again -- either to our troops, or to the civilians that our government refer to as "collateral damage" . . .

the converse also seems to be true . . . those who have never served (read: Republicans) are all to willing to put other peoples' kids and our national treasure in harms way . . . as is happening right now . . .
