OK, now that the Bashing Coretta Scott King's Funeral news cycle is over, I want you all to say this with me.
I, state your name, promise that I will never again waste a single moment of my life constructing painstaking justifications of something myself or a brother or sister Democrat has done simply because some Republican mouthpiece went on TV or on radio and said that it was inappropriate.
I pledge that I will remember that people who think that Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, and Tucker Carlson are models of appropriate public behavior are the last people in the entire world from which I should take advice on civility, class, manners, etiquette, or the proper way to show respect for a beloved public figure.
I pledge that I will never apologize in word or in deed for having stood up for myself, for a brother or sister Democrat, or for my political principles, no matter how many Republican-owned and operated media outlets tell me it was wrong, inappropriate, foolish, or pointless.
I pledge that I will assume henceforth that any Republican-owned or operated talking head who tells me that something I or a brother or sister Democrat has done was wrong and bad is only doing it to fuck with me. Therefore I will pay that talking head no mind, nor shall I agonize within myself over whether that talking head could possibly be right, for I know that he or she is only attempting to manipulate and exploit my sincere desire to treat all human beings with respect.
I pledge that only if a brother or sister Democrat whose opinion I respect says to me, "No, really, that actually was kind of an assholic thing to do, and here's why," will I give the matter true consideration.
I pledge that before I say, "No, really, that actually was kind of an assholic thing to do, and here's why," to a fellow-Democrat, I will examine my conscience to make sure that I am not accidentally repeating a right-wing talking point that somehow snuck in under the radar.
I vow and affirm that being on the defensive blows, that I am tired of getting beaten up and beaten down, that I understand that the mainstream media no longer speaks with the voice of the people but with the voice of the people who are trying to secure one-party rule in this country, and that I will no longer allow any combination of bought and paid for talking heads, online polls, or call-in radio chatter to make me doubt myself, my convictions, or my fellow Democrats.
I, state your name, understand that negative coverage is the price that our corporate-controlled media exacts for anything that threatens the current power structure. I will therefore stop chasing my own tail in an effort to avoid such coverage. I will, instead, strive to conduct myself and to encourage my fellow Democrats and elected leaders to conduct themselves at all times with what I believe to be pride, courage, dignity, honesty, and resolve, and let everyone else compare me to my enemies and draw their own conclusions.
