Specter Believes Spy Program Violates Law
By HOPE YEN, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' explanations so far for the Bush administration's failure to obtain warrants for its domestic surveillance program are "strained" and "unrealistic," the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman said Sunday.

Sen. Arlen Specter, whose committee has scheduled hearings Monday on the National Security Agency program, said he believes the administration violated a 1978 law specifically calling for a secretive court to consider and approve such monitoring.

Specter, R-Pa., said he might consider subpoenas for administration documents that would detail its legal justification for the program.

"The president could've taken this there and lay it on the line," Specter said, citing the special court set up under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978.<snip>

1. The War Powers Act of 1973 lives !
Congress cannot abdicate or delegate IT'S constitutional authorities to another 'officer' or any other branch of government. Self evident.

2. Typical Specter stunt. Don't expect much out of him. He always
ends up towing the line. It is all an act that makes him look reasonable.

6. ah, yes...like the ScAlito confirmation
and his hypocritical vote in favor of someone who will overturn Roe v. Wade? Specter SAYS he PRO-choice.

7. While I have little faith in Specter
I do hope that the administration will, eventually, face retribution for this.

They have to!

8. Don't be taken in by Specter. This is his typical ploy.
He will start out like gang-busters, giving everyone the idea that there will be a fair and impartial investigation of the issues. Then he will end up doing exactly what the Regime wants him to do. His intitial "sceptical" stance is used as part of the white-wash. He and the media will pretend that "the system works."

There is no hope for the nation in Arlen Specter.

10. Specter's historic stance as a rabid drug warrior
has already shown he has little respect for the 4th and 5th Amendments, so it seems to me rather unlikely that he'll do anything about this. It's probably little more than convenient posturing.

My opinion, for what it's worth.

12. Remember when Republicans were
questioning his being the chairman after the 2004 election?

This is one of the reasons...

Still doesn't make up for the magic bullet garbage.

14. Like being gummed by an old dog
When you don't even worry if the dog intends you harm or not. With hundreds of presidential statements blowing off Congressional laws at bill signing, from a rubber stamp total GOP dominated Congress no less,
NOW they are going to notice? And do WHAT exactly?

They are a hundred light years from being even relevant, much less redeemable for good intentions. You have to wonder if the Dems really would do much more with a majority. In fact we do wonder and must calculate that, yes, in all likelihood they would go through the proper legal procedures sand muddle through several compromises and fearful storms of RW gas toward some form of justice.

But that is why we are in this mess today because the parties and government of the US was not up to the test and the will of the people has been successfully subverted and hidden with nary a peep from either party. Grant what words and individuals the merits they earn from day to day in this Captivity, they are a failure and will lie in ignominy forever.

The Years of Infamy.

Yet in all this one thing gives me hope. Unlike the Regan years I no longer suffer the delusion that the majority of the people chose this. They resist the fraud and had to be blatantly robbed and disenfranchised, and the propagandists since Clinton have shrunken to corpse flies around their pitiful lords and masters. The people grow and maintain, the usurpers rot in their loot.
