Considering a move to Canada? Think again!
Edited on Sat Feb-04-06 03:38 PM by Cascadian
I have a bad feeling about the current Tory win in Canada. I know it's only a minority government and there is a strong progressive movement in Canada but you cannot deny that this current regime down in the States is just taking Canada's souvereignty bit by bit. With Harper about to run the show, I really think he and his right-wing pals are going to be a catalyst for a Canada-U.S. union and Bush-style removal of civil liberties. All of this makes me rethink any plan I would have of fleeing into Canada when the heat really is on. I think Latin America is starting to look really good. Particularly South America.

The grand plan of globalization upon these countries has failed and failed miserably. This is why you are starting to see leftist and left-of center candidates winning in places like Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Chile among others. Sure some of these places are considered poor and corrupt but what the hell do you think is happening here? And if another terrorist attack is unleashed in this country, you think everything will be back to normal? Of course not. Plus, you try to sneak across the Canadian border to flee martial law, I amsure Haprer will have the Mounties send you back and the Feds send you to an interment camp. I would rather be free and live a simple life then be rich and have no voice. I think South America truly is the future. I can only hope the Mexicans will elect Obrador in the election South of the Border. Then the corporatist globalization-worker's exploitation movement will truly be dead in Latin America.

I am planning to learn Spanish along with my other studies and look more into countries down in Latin America. I am interested in Chile at the moment. It looks to be the more attractive of the South American countries.

Canada, I love you as a neighbor but I am worried the new man in your life (Harper) is going to leave you in ruins.

1. No way. Canada will never be a part of the US.
The rightwing in the United States would never allow a large bloc of almost certain "blue" states to enter the union. That will not happen.

Canadians are smarter than Americans. They'll deal with Harper when they have to.

6. They would probably let Alberta in.
It seems to be the most conservative of the Canadian provinces.

2. Harper snubbed by 'progressive' summit
{Though, with Blair and Clinton invited, it's not all that progressive.)

Harper snubbed by 'progressive' summit

Canada has been dropped from a global club of "progressive" nations because of the election of a new federal government headed by Stephen Harper.

Former prime minister Jean Chretien and his Liberal successor, Paul Martin, made overseas trips in 2003 and 2004 respectively to join British Prime Minister Tony Blair, South African President Thabo Mbeki, former U.S. president Bill Clinton and a host of other "centre-left" political luminaries at self-proclaimed "Progressive Governance Summits" in London and Budapest.

But Mr. Harper is not invited to next week's conference in South Africa, says the director of a British-based think-tank that has organized the international meetings since 1999.

Mr. Harper "wouldn't fit the political criteria" to gain membership, said Matt Browne, whose organization Policy Network is co-sponsoring the Feb. 11-12 conference in Pretoria with the South African government.

3. nah
i dont give the minority government much time. so they better act quick if they want to get things in place that they want.
the only thing the other parties(other than liberal) agreed on what that the liberals were corrupt and not running the government correctly, other than that they disagree about most stuff.
The NDP , who sided with the conservatives in the no confidence vote, are more to the left than the liberal party even is. Infact the liberal party is kind of seen as a moderate party up there, from what I understand.

They did as we did in 2000(well, not really since it was a stolen election), people voted for a change more than they did the persons actual ideology. They'll see what theyve voted for shortly, and they won't like it.

like i say, it wont last long.

7. I don't think you need to fear for
Canada's liberal soul. That said, I'm happy where I am. I don't fear for Vermont's liberal soul either.

11. Minority for now
But with Liberal fatigue and the NDP's difficulties, I wouldn't be surprised to see the conservatives win a majority if they can keep their nose clean. Canadians are probably getting election fatigue about now and the moderate liberals (their liberals are NOT liberals) might swing to the conservatives just to get a full-time government in place.

However, the conservatives do have a minority government. And they'd better watch themselves about cozying up too much to the Americans. That would spell disaster in Ontario and Quebec, where substantial gains were recently made.

Expect another election within the year.

Another important factor weighing into the equation is the fact that the print media is pretty right wing. So too is the privately held broadcast media.
