Militant Tax Evader Prepares for Raid
Militant Tax Evader Prepares for Raid
By PHILIP ELLIOTT

AP

CONCORD, N.H. (Jan. 19) - A former militia man convicted of tax evasion prepared for a government siege Friday at his fortress-like home, but U.S. marshals gave no indication they were planning to confront him.

Ed Brown said he was ready for a swarm of federal agents to descend on his property to execute an arrest warrant issued after he failed to appear for the end of his trial. He and his wife contend that they did not have to pay income taxes, and his supporters say a conflict could be violent.

"If Mexico came up on my land and tried to take my land, would I not fight?" Brown said. "The United States is the same exact thing as Mexico in this state."

Brown, 63, and his wife, Elaine, 65, were convicted Thursday of plotting to conceal their income and avoid paying federal income tax. They argued the tax is illegitimate and they are not required to pay it.

1. Very interesting take on the US coming on to his land and seizing
it equal to Mexico coming onto his land and seizing it. Any one know where his opinions are coming form?

8. Well, his views are very typical of those that think that the US
government has no authority to tax its citizens. The signs that he has posted are typical of that mindset.

He does have a very nice home. One of the newschannels had a blurb about him the other day- damn near palatial home.

2. How could "Mexico" invade his land?
Mexicans, maybe, but Mexico itself? I didn't know our southern neighbor was ambulatory!

5. Um
you could easily find many sources that would say "America's invasion of Iraq" etc. so that's a pretty silly angle but having said that I'd say that while there are many reasons for protesting the grotesque and unjust US tax system this guy, from what I've read, is a bit loony. I could be wrong and I'll look into it further.

And of course none of this happens in a vaccuum.

6. But you won't find any that say "If America came up on my land..."
Unless they are penned or spoken by a nitwit. It's the specific use of the word in the full context of the sentence that makes the difference, as though the nation somehow grew legs and walked up to the fool's property.

tax law is written the way HR Block et al wants it to be
There is NO REASON for taxes to be complicated, except that tax lawyers and accountants are a multibillion dollar industry, and they aren't about to let that go.

There is much to protest about our current tax structure- it punishs the lower middle class, the tables used haven't been updated in way too long, etc. However, protesting against the idea of income tax is ridiculous. Even the most ardent libertarian realizes that someone needs to build roads and schools.

7. but a civil disobedient, not an asshole
He is protesting a war and bad government in his own way; by refusing to pay for it.

I don't call that 'asshole', but brave... most persons just finance the war and
say that they had no 'choice' in the matter of helping a mass murder...
those might be the 'assholes' you're looking for.

13. Check the link below from 1994--he's a crazy guy who advocates violence against the Federal
government, and has been for years. He's in the "Janet Reno is Evil" club. A fucking nut.

12. No he isn't. He's a whacky militiaman, who won't pay into social security, who won't
pay into federal highway maintenance, who won't pay into a host of other federal programs that have nothing to do with the war. If he were protesting the war, he'd selectively take that portion of his taxes that go to the war, and place it in an escrow account. But he isn't. This guy is a loonytune who advocates violence against the feds, and a cheat--he's cheating all of us by using the services of the federal government, and not paying his share:

Brown was convicted Thursday of conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to disguise large financial transactions and structuring, the act of disguising large financial transactions. Brown stopped attending federal court on Jan. 12, the fourth day of the trial. In conversations with U.S. Marshals and reporters and in e-mail messages, Brown has said that he plans to stay in his fortified Plainfield home and prepare for an armed confrontation with federal officials.
http://www.concordmonitor.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070120/REPOSITORY/701200363/1043/48HOURS

Violence is anticipated, perhaps a bit eagerly by he and his (toothless?) supporters--this is NOT the way "peace activists" behave, fachrissake--this guy is a militianut:

Supporters say raid on tax evader may turn violent

By PHILIP ELLIOTT, The Associated Press

Published: Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007

CONCORD – A former militia man convicted of tax evasion prepared for a government siege Friday as his supporters called for more people to show up at his fortress-like home and fight his arrest.

Ed Brown said he was ready for a swarm of federal agents to descend on his property to execute an arrest warrant. His wife and his supporters said they believe a confrontation could turn violent....

This guy is no hero, he's CRAZY...he has been for YEARS, way before BushCo--read up on him, and retract that idiotic assertion that he is a peacenik. Not all of our tax dollars go to BushCo's wars, and not everyone who doesn't want to pay taxes is antiwar, not by any stretch--this guy wants to OVERTHROW the government by force and violence.

You need to read up on his history before you ascribe an antiwar agenda to this crazy, violent shitheel. Here's a start:

....Brown warns there is a second Revolutionary War approaching. But he says this time the citizen patriots have AK-47s.....He contends there are 130 detention centers set up around the country, including one at the former Pease Air Force Base, ready to imprison people like him who resist the government.

Gun control is at the center of the enemies' plan, he explained. He predicts ''blood in the streets'' ...."...There's two freight trains coming down the track full steam ahead. True American citizens like myself will die for my country. We will never release any firearms to the United States.''

An ad in the October 1994 issue of ''Soldier of Fortune magazine'' warns, ''It's Groundhog Day! For those of us living under the shadow of gun control...Hide your weapons WHILE YOU CAN!'' The ''Groundhog,'' an underground storage container big enough for four AR15's, two AK-47s and 2300 rounds of ammunition, costs $94.95.

Brown said the militia is setting up ''Constitutional courts'' in numerous states, including here in New Hampshire...Who will be tried? ''Anybody who commits un-American activity. Anybody who has created insurrection or sedition or conspiracy against the American people.'' And what will the penalty be? ''Whatever the people decide.''

Brown only became involved in the CDM 11 months ago. But ever since he has been unable to enjoy the things he used to....Brown believes the conspiracy is world-wide; references to a ''New World Order'' set off alarms in militia members. He thinks a confrontation is ''imminent'' and he believes the year 2000 has special significance for ''the bad guys.''....He said the militia has declared New Hampshire a ''free zone,'' neutral territory in which the federal government has no authority. ''All we're looking for is as many people get warned as possible, to protect as many lives as we can before this thing goes down.''....

11. The only industrial nation without healthcare
And the amount of taxes we pay is way beyond just the stated income tax. Of course they are called fees, etc.

Now we know half of our tax dollars goes to the very Pentagon that we rail against. And that means no health care and much more. Maybe it's later than we think.

And then there's the fact that corporations are slipping off the hook and evading their tax obligations all made possible by our government officials.

Yep the little folk are being bled dry.

14. But this crazy asshole could give a shit about that. Read his interview
with the Union Leader from 1994. He's a NUT. Certainly not a standard-bearer for socialized medicine, improved education spending, free college for all, or any of the other wonderful programs that normal, caring people would like. This kook wants to overthrow the government and keep his money....to hell with any government services, he just wants to hunker down with an AK-47 and kill anyone who threatens him. He's wacko.

call their bluff.

Make taxes completely voluntary, and let them see the way America degenerates into chaos and how crime rates go up, because people have to steal in order to stay alive.

They have no appreciation how their taxes cause the (somewhat) civilized and pedestrian nature of our society.

18. Too many would suffer, though. The people getting care at NIH, the
federal poverty programs (decimated though they are) and other key programs...to say nothing of the federal highways crumbling, police services going to hell without subsidies, schools all becoming private, to say nothing of foreign armies invading because we'd have no "well regulated militia" to push them back...we'd be hosed.

21. COUNTDOWN TO WACO 2!
Or is this more of a Ruby Ridge kind of moment? Either way, I call BS on the US Marshall saying they don't plan to go after him in force. SWAT is going to murder this guy, and plausibly a few bystanders who aren't smart enough to clear out when the pretend soldiers come knocking.

K&R
