I love the openness in our country:
I'm doing research for a professor and had to figure out the status of a piece of legislation. Sen. Collins (R-ME) sponsored the bill last year so I found her website, dialed her D.C. office and spoke with a nice young woman.

I'm not even a citizen of Maine and she treated my inquiry as if it were her most important job of the day.

She told me what happened to the Bill (it got canned because it didn't get voted on before the end of the legislative session) and sent me on my way.

Very pleasant experience.

It's not a huge deal but it was nice that I got right through and talked with a human who actually knew what the hell she was supposed to know.

1. Not so the news media
I know Jack Cafferty is gung ho when it comes to complaining about bush but some times he does not know what the hell he is talking about.

He is complaining about the house of representatives taking a four day weekend. Well if he had taken the time to investigate he would have found that it is something that is done every year. The republicans have a retreat for the republican cacus and then the democrats take a four day weekend for the same thing. He said the democrats are worst than the republicans because they said they would work a five day week and haven't yet. The took Monday off. Well wasn't Monday MLK Holiday. It has been a federal holiday for about 10 or 15 years now. Where has he been. That's the trouble, the media rants and raves about little things but the big stuff they skip over.
