Drudge sarcasm over global warming announcement.
Today Drudge is reporting on Speaker Pelosi's efforts to form a special committee to look into global with the headline "PELOSI ANNOUNCES 'GLOBAL WARMING' PANEL", positioned below a picture of an orange plant covered with long dangling icicles.

I know, I know, par for the course, but I can't help feeling irritated by this continuing display of ignorance from RW puppets. Are they really so stupid that they don't get by now that all manner of unusual weather activity -- including unusual cold weather we have been experiencing of late -- can be explained in terms of Global Warming, or is it that they secretly get it but deliberately feign ignorance in order to brainwash the less-informed masses and further the greedy corporate agenda?

Either way it sucks and I wish they would cut it out. Perhaps what we need is a better label than "Global Warming" -- one that in a word or two captures the entire scope of the phenomenon, and is thus better able to stand against perfunctory RW distortion.

What about: Global Climate Flip-Flop. Hey, it's their word!

6. I have long pushed for either Climate Breakdown . . .
Or, perhaps more accurately, Climate Destabilization.

Doesn't exactly float off the tongue, though.

7. Never heard those, but I like the sound of them.
Neither as you say flow off the tongue but both do the descriptive work that the term "Global Warming" fails to do.

Whatever the case may be I'm going to keep an ear out for a general change in the vernacular but until then, do my private part but by using anything but GW in conversation.

8. I have not noticed, probably
because I have not been paying close enough attention, but that is definitely a trend in the right direction. Thanks for the heads up and I hope to see more of that.

4. I wish it were true, but a lot of "journalists" use it.
which says something about modern journalism.

Every time you click on that horrid Drudge Site link, an Rovarian Hell's Angel gets its wings.

They won't if we, the people refuse to pay attention to this loon who gets his content directly from KKKarl Rove's FAX machine.

3. Their displays of ignorance present good opportunities to educate people.
I love when some RWer quotes an idiocy from the likes of limbaugh or drudge.

14. I agree, but worry that too many listen only to the loons . . .
Edited on Fri Jan-19-07 01:08 PM by jelly
A display of ignorance is not a great opportunity to educate them because they take whatever the loons say as gospel and close their minds to anything they might hear to the contrary. Orange grove with icicles is the end of the story for them, the Gospel according to Drudge. Those innocent Americans that are being kept deliberately in the dark by evil RW propoganda artists might decide that climate change is real after all if they only had access to the facts, or at least were not mislead by false rhetoric. They might decide to join our team or at least vote for people who will support legislation to address the developing crisis. If something as simple as an effort to change a descriptive term in the general vernacular will provide the RW less opportunity to mislead, I am all for making the effort.

Then again, maybe I am giving the RW audience too much credit. Maybe they deserve some or most of the blame for willfully choosing to hear what is only convenient for them to hear (to allude to the title of Gore's documentary).

5. We deserve it
I don't know how many times I've seen people on DU point to unusually high tempertatures in a particular area or the unusually large number of hurricanes in 2005 as proof of global warming. And so, junk science is met with junk science.

21. You are correct.
But most people won't see it that way. If we say the number of Hurricanes in 2005 was a result of global warming, then why can't they say that Global warming is a hoax because of icicles in California.

We don't know why the earth was much warmer from the 11th - 13th centuries than it is now. Until we get more educated, it's all speculation. I just wish the RW would speculate on the side of caution, and consider reducing C02 emissions.

11. It's the same thing Fox News did a week or two back, when...
they talked about how cold it was in Denver (snowstorm), but conveniently ignored the extremely warm weather in the northeast.

Americans aren't that stupid. They know.

12. Head in the sand
It is unfathomable to me to see the complete lack of interest by some folks @ the environment and the risks we face.

Yes it is greed driven but also deeper. Repubs are the more fearful and whinyer as children and I'd venture more paranoid as adults. They have their beliefs and don't want to be bothered by contrarian views. It destabalizes their tower of accomplishments. That is everything they have to give and if it is bullshit...their brains would explode.

After all they, the very financially successful, are just doing what we all have aspired to do...succeed. They were commited to it.

This is why the public interest is different than the corporate interest

They financially are far better off than me. A recovering peace Corps volunteer, still trying to adjust after 30 yrs. A warrior for the earth who has seen a lot and didn't make squat. With out my lovely wife I would be pushing a shopping cart.

I am the one who hasn't succeeded in our modern culture.

I don't think there is anything inherently undesirable about what I see as people's natural tendency to want to succeed, or be recognized, or achieve excellence. It's part of what makes us human, that drive to excellence, to be better, to make progress, and how can that be such a bad thing. The problem is how warped has become society's definition of excellence. In today's world people like you who devote their lives to advocating for the public interest are marginalized while obscenely wealthy CEOs are heralded as the role models of our times.

I confess that I am no expert historian but I believe and hope that the unreal corporate culture in which we find ourselves living today is only an aberration, and that in time, people will wake up and start focusing again on what's really important. I dream of a world where excellence is measured not in terms of the number of dollars you were able to make or the size of the home you were able to afford but in terms of the number of people you were able to teach to feed themselves, the number of years of peace you were able to negotiate, or the number of trees you were able to save.
