a discussion should also be started on the improper pejorative slang of prick, dick, etc.

Yes, a healthy penis is decidedly the norm, however one ignores the unhealthy penis at one's peril. When calling somebody a dick, do you mean the vibrant, healthy and sound organ? Or does your name-calling unwittingly refer to one that is ailing and infected?



A more in-depth of the subject matter is called for, especially for the uninitiated. Let us take "dick" as a starting point. Many will recognize the word as coarse slang for a contemptible person; however the young reader may have no idea that it was historically a nickname for a sleuth or detective.

It would be tempting to purposely misinterpret the lyric's double entendre and assign Shaft as having a non-public penis; in this example, though, 'private dick' clearly has some connotation as to law enforcement or something affiliated.

Returning to the matter at hand, though, you can easily see how your calling someone a "dick", "prick", or similar, can be fraught with unintended meaning, both innocent and horrific. The dick to which you refer may have jock itch, a fungal infection of the groin and upper thighs. Lesions caused by jock itch can extend from the crease between the inner thigh and pelvis, over the adjacent upper inner thigh, and into the anal area. Now did you mean to call someone that? I think not.
