That's now the second execution we've fucked up. We're really showing ourselves to be so much better than they are.

This is bound to happen when you have long-drop hangings. Sure you can use the charts, but even those charts are often wrong. So while most of the time you'll get a clean snapped neck, sometimes you will get a decapitation (which while messy, is at least quick) or the neck doesn't snap and the victim does slowly and agonizingly of strangulation.

there have been formulas on how long to make the rope for the long drop, based on height and weight of the condemned. This should not have happened.

6. Hanging is a science, but it wasn't "we" who did it.

The object of hanging is to break the neck so death is instant. In order for that to happen, the weight of the condemned must be taken into considerations as well as the length of the drop. Get it wrong and the result is either a strangulation or a decapitation.
