Last month, Macy's discovered that some of the Sean John jackets it was selling were trimmed in "raccoon dog."
Also known as Asiatic Raccoon and listed on the Federal Trade Commission's register of species whose fur is legal to sell in the United States, the Asiatic Raccoon is a good-sized canid also known as a raccoon dog. Chinese fur traders relieve the animal of its hide by whacking it on the ground to stun it then skinning it out while it's still alive. They then throw the skinned animal, who by now has regained consciousness, into a pile to die.
When Macy's discovered what they had on their racks, they immediately pulled the jackets off their shelves and returned them to the vendor, who swore that they would stop using this fur on their products.
Fire up the flames of righteous indignation, folks; JCPenney of Plano, Texas has not only admitted that they sell this fur, but that they intend to continue selling it. They pulled Asiatic Raccoon-trimmed jackets that were labeled as containing "raccoon" from their shelves over the Christmas season, but have lined out the word "raccoon" on the tags and have put the coats back on the shelves.
