Okay...need help fellow DUers.
Edited on Sat Jan-13-07 10:41 PM by TransitJohn
I've been working here in Nicaragua since just before Christmas, and am coming home in a week. (Wow...what can happen in a month while you're away, huh?) So here's the deal. I really want to attend the protest in DC on the 27th with my daughter, but will be on a shoestring budget. Also, I haven't previously been to DC so will be a novice with local subways and other surface transportation. Who can lend some space and time to two Wyoming Dems? We would be MOST grateful.

edit:spelling d'oh!

8. We're making reservations tonight. See if we can stay there, too.
Last time I was in DC, we stayed at the Capitol Hill Sheraton where the conference was and, lol, I don't think we can afford that this time.

lol

22. Oh, that is so sweet!
I'm really happy for you. When I went a couple of years ago, there was a DU meetup and lots of us roomed together and many of us marched together. I got to carry the DU banner (brought to the protest by EarlG) for quite a while. Fond memories! I wonder if anyone has started a get together thread?

19. Kick and some thoughts
I went to the last large rally. I stayed in the Youth Hostel there in DC. Not very luxurious but well within my budget ($27 a night for a bed, one communal shower/bathroom area per floor, Men's Shower/Bathroom and Women's Shower/Bathroom) and very close to the Metro. The DC Metro is really very easy to use. The rail lines are color coded and trains run every 10 minutes or so (I think). I've never had a problem with the Metro. Below is a link to the map. The orange line runs E-W and the green line runs N-S. Metro Center Station is right in the middle. Great way to travel.

RE: Hostel, if you get a bed there, be sure to bring shower shoes and your own towels, soap, shampoo and washcloth (think of like camping indoors). There are lockers available for rent. Also, always have antibacterial handy. There is a communal kitchen on the third floor (I think) with microwaves and an oven. Everyone is very friendly and it's located kitty-cornered from the historical Asbury United Methodist Church one of the oldest African American founded Methodist Churches in the US. Very nice, welcoming congregation. They love visitors.
Link for the DC Hostel here ---> http://www.hiwashingtondc.org/ There is also a bus stop right in front of the Hostel.

21. I had one problem with the metro
The lighting was kind of dim and my eyes are getting to the point where I can't make out maps in the dark and I had some trouble with that when I was alone. Most of the other times, I had young whippersnappers to help out. The sad thing is I'm only 43. I didn't know the eyes went this early!

27. I did get on the train going the wrong direction once.
Edited on Sun Jan-14-07 12:37 AM by libnnc
I went a couple of stops before I realized it but got off and jumped on the next train back in the right direction. I'm not one who travels alone very easily and that DC trip was my first alone. When I got to the Hostel, most of my bunk mates were there for the protest and I hooked up with a really nice woman from Boston. We had a great time. I'd do it again in a heart beat but I'm in grad school and the semester just started.

Wonderful trip. I was pretty proud of myself! :D

edit 'cause this Syrah has inhibited my typing skills

I'll kick it in the morning too. I have faith in the DU community but they do need to have it in their awareness. I'm surprised there isn't already a thread or two discussing sharing accomodations. I ended up bunking with a couple of DUers for one of the Washington protests. They were/are lovely people though they were smokers so I don't think I could bunk with them again as I have asthma and it didn't make my lungs happy. I did quite enjoy talking with them though. One of them could rant along with the best of them! The other was an appreciative audience. It was heaven for a Leo!

38. My partner and i have similar concerns. I was wondering if it's legal to camp on the mall.
Can you sleep in some of the federal park space. We're both pretty rugged types. I'd much rather camp out than pay for a hotel for myriad reasons. But I'd rather not be arrested.

I'm having a hard time organizing a trip from Mississippi's Coast. So Wyoming is a little out of the way, but I feel for you, Brother.

How old's your daughter? I brought my 14 year-old son to a march to stop the welfare reform back in '96. It wasn't that big of a march, but it sure was an education to him.
