Rightwing nut job has "An Inconvenient Truth." banned from schools

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/299253_inconvenient11.html

This week in Federal Way schools, it got a lot more inconvenient to show one of the top-grossing documentaries in U.S. history, the global-warming alert "An Inconvenient Truth."

After a parent who supports the teaching of creationism and opposes sex education complained about the film, the Federal Way School Board on Tuesday placed what it labeled a moratorium on showing the film. The movie consists largely of a PowerPoint presentation by former Vice President Al Gore recounting scientists' findings.
  Paramount Classics
Al Gore's documentary about global warming may not be shown unless the teacher also presents an "opposing view."

"Condoms don't belong in school, and neither does Al Gore. He's not a schoolteacher," said Frosty Hardison, a parent of seven who also said that he believes the Earth is 14,000 years old. "The information that's being presented is a very cockeyed view of what the truth is. ... The Bible says that in the end times everything will burn up, but that perspective isn't in the DVD."

Hardison's e-mail to the School Board prompted board member David Larson to propose the moratorium Tuesday night.

See folks? All it takes is a single email from one nutjob to change school policy that affects hundreds.

The school system should just do the noble thing and just rid itself of the heathen science dept.

1. sounds good
as soon as someone creates a documentary on DVD that factually debunks climate change, they should show it.

I am not holding my breath.

8. Lets make sure we show that DVD
disputing factual data beyond a reasonable doubt. Its downright cruel how people like "frosty" get persecuted for his religious beliefs.

the good people of Federal Way remove this David Larson nut ASAP.

He's got no business in the education business.

And this parent.

And the people who voted for the school board.

"What will they do when someone complains about teaching science."

Um, we just found out.

Is that actually in the Bible? Global warming now is welcomed by the Kook Fringe as a sign of the apocalypse, along with approaching world-wide war and death?

11. "The Bible says..."
And that, my friends, is the crux of the problem. The Bible doesn't say one damned thing; people simply read their views into whatever they read.

About 150 years ago Baptists in the south split from the Baptists to form the Southern Baptists. Why? Because the "Bible says" that slavery is perfectly fine. "The Southern Baptist Convention of 1995 voted June 20 to adopt a resolution renouncing its racist roots and apologizing for its past defense of slavery. The racism resolution marked the denomination's first formal acknowledgment that racism played a role in its founding."

Maybe 150 years from now these "believers" will issue another apology regarding global warming. Naturally they won't be doing it from any current coastal cities.

12. Not HUNDREDS...thousands...
Federal Way is a small city with more than one high school.

How is it that ANYONE thinks it's okay to oppose science with unprovable religious belief?

And people wonder why I regularly call revealed, organized religion a "scam."

20. If I was a parent in that school system,
I would attempt to contact the other parents-- buy several copies of the movie, and pass it around library book style.

It's ridiculous that one nutball can create the curriculum for an entire school district, keeping our children not only ignorant but stupid on purpose.

In a November 15, 2006 LTE, he clearly believed the Earth was older than 100,000 years. His point is that cars didn't cause the Ice Age to end 30,000 years ago, and that 100,000 years ago the sun was younger.

I guess no matter what little town you live in, no matter where, there is a Frosty Hardison. I can almost picture the guy (of course, I picture him as looking like the hillbilly guy on the Hemi ads, but he must be a bit more put together if he has a wife and kids).

Federal Way, WA.

Named after the old highway, home to Weyerhaeuser.
There isn't much else of note about Federal Way, other than "Well, we're halfway to Tacoma now."

33. I'm afraid I think this guy is right, even though he's clearly nuts.

A film by someone who it's not quite inconceivable may be running for president in two years time, putting forward his point of view about something that will be a key issue if he does, should not be shown "at face value" in schools.

"Global Warming" is a scientific, not a political subject.

"Al Gore talks about global warming" is both, no matter how apolitical the content is.

There are plenty of good educational materials about global warming that aren't made by politicians.
