Maybe a draft would be a good thing....
I've fought the draft for more than 30 years. I also fought for the 18 year old vote, birth control rights and abortion rights. Quite frankly, I'm tired.

Maybe a draft would engage the young people and make this war personal for them. Maybe THEN they would take up the banner and fight.

1. That's one of the arguments
This is a very contentious thing to discuss around here though, I've noticed.

5. I know it's contentious
and I've been very, very adamant against a draft. I'm starting to believe I have been wrong.

6. Curently limbaugh and his ilk
Edited on Thu Jan-11-07 10:33 AM by BOSSHOG
entertain the lemmings by blathering on with the insane comparison that more americans get killed in car wrecks then in battle in Iraq, and the lemmings pump their fists and feel good about their worthless existence. If he came on the air one day and said there will be a draft and you may die in battle in Iraq instead of in a car wreck their would be no fist pumping but rightous indignation that this iraqi thing hasn't been resolved yet. I can't figure out whether conservatives in America are more ignorant or more arrogant.

7. Only the middle class and poor would be drafted
Others would find a way out of it just as they did in Vietnam. The well to do in this country do nothing to serve it.

9. I'm not arguing that.....
you're correct that others would find a way out. BUT the young would have a stake in the war and they clearly don't seem to at this time.

10. Not true
The system has been revamped and deferments are very difficult to get, and local boards are responsible for providing replacements for any deferments that they grant, and those replacements
have to come from the same area.

Even CO status has got to be well documented, and forget about those long college deferments, now
you get to finish the semester and then have to report to the induction center. And all medical
exemptions will be based on what the what the MEPS medical personnel find, not on what your personal
physician says. So, no Rush Limbaugh excuses.

But I'm sure that like every system has its flaws this one will as well, but we can't fix the bugs if we don't look for them, can we?

12. I'm curious about the singling out of the youth as opposed to the
over 40 somethings who cooked up this clusterfuck to begin with. I don't know about you, but in my small corner of the world it was also the over 40 crowd who forgot the Viet Nam era and who supported this cabal. These same people who didn't want the factual information that the cabal was lying them into a disaster.

If you want a draft then start with ALL of the Bush** supporters including the young republicans and get them ALL first 'cause when someone comes looking for my kids, who have never supported this mess, who saw through the lies, and who have attended rallies and marches against this disaster, all hell will break loose.

I'm really not a violent person, but I can envision that I could become hostile to protect my kids.
