School district muzzles Al Gore
School district muzzles Al Gore

STEVE MAYNARD; The News Tribune

The Federal Way School Board Tuesday night put the brakes on schools showing Al Gore’s global warming movie, “An Inconvenient Truth.”

The board required that an opposing view be presented in order for teachers to present the film. Board president Ed Barney said he’s received about a half-dozen complaints from parents that their child was taking the film as fact after viewing it at school.

“We have to ensure that our schools are not being used to politically indoctrinate anyone,” said board member Dave Larson. The board voted 3 to 0, with two members absent.

In “An Inconvenient Truth,” the former U.S. vice president is shown presenting a slide show around the country on the catastrophic dangers of climate change and his crusade to combat it. A number of the nation’s top climate scientists have given the film high marks for scientific accuracy.

3. Nutcakes is a euphemism
They are stark raving mad. Everyone should see An Inconvenient Truth.

16. An opposing view to the truth!
What do they need to prove this is true? Lets take them and let them sit on the edge of an ice shelf for a year and see if they notice any of the ice melting. Hopefully a small piece of it would break off and they would float off into the sea. Then we could pretend we needed an opposing view to whether they needed help or not.

18. My first thought also!
More corrupt Gov't speak infiltrating all facets of our lives. Park service reps. at the Grand Canyon cannot say that the canyon is older than 6000 years either. Science must be the Devil's work :wtf:

2. Equal time for facts and lies?
Is that really what education is about? Guess so if they are putting evolution disclaimers in science books.

6. Some say, however, that the world, rather than being a sphere,
is, in fact, a disc. Over the edge there be monsters.

5. Well, I Had My Own Little Success At My School:
Edited on Wed Jan-10-07 05:01 PM by Dinger
There is a republican science teacher in the MS/HS, and he heard that I had a copy of An Inconvenient Truth, so he e-mailed me and asked if he could borrow it to "hear what Al Gore has to say about global warming." He asked me the next day if he could borrow it a little longer, so he could show it to his science classes, and I of course said "sure!" He ordered a copy for his own use, and signed on to the website (climatecrisis.net/). It's small, but it sure felt like a victory to me:)

I just wish there was an elementary school version of it, so I could show it to my class.

8. The asshole superintendent hasn't even seen the movie (see last line of the article)
If he had, he'd know that it isn't political at all. We're doomed with people like this in charge of our schools. Fuck.

17. To be followed by John Stossel journalist: real or does he just play one on television?
Edited on Wed Jan-10-07 05:48 PM by Uncle Joe
"But Larson pointed out two articles presenting counter-views. One is by journalist and author John Stossel, who writes that many scientists laugh at doomsday predictions by Gore and other environmentalists. Some scientists, Stossel writes, say the result of global warming may be benign."
