DALLAS, Jan. 9 — Intimates of President Bush have singled out Southern Methodist University as the likely site of his presidential library, but faculty members, complaining of being bypassed, are raising sharp questions about the school’s identification with his presidency.

More Politics NewsIn a meeting Tuesday, faculty members complained of a lack of consultation over the emerging agreement and all but demanded answers from the university’s president, R. Gerald Turner, on the relationship that would develop between the university and the library.

“There’s been a lack of transparency from the beginning,” said Tony Pederson of the journalism faculty, urging the university’s administration “to be more forthcoming with detailed information.”

Cal Jillson, a political science professor, called for “more rounded information” because, he said, “this train is leaving.” He said there could be a final decision on the library before the end of the month.

1. '...“There’s been a lack of
transparency from the beginning,” said Tony Pederson of the journalism faculty, urging the university’s administration “to be more forthcoming with detailed information.”

That is the perfect description of the entire administration from 'selection 2000' to now and beyond. It is not surprising it would spill over into the selection of a chimpie library.

Library???? Oh, now I get it...it will be filled w/ picture books of all his photo ops.

4. Yeah, Yale and Harvard enabled Bush* by giving him degrees
for his academic "achievements," so they should be forced to host The Leader's library as partial punishment for their sins against humanity.

3. Did the Dallas paper cover this?
I'd be interested in knowing if the Dallas paper covered this.

The link is to the NY Times.

5. this one's 2+ weeks old...
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/122206dnmetlibrary.304c4815.html

did a quick Google search- this from the Dallas Morning News. There may be more from that area, if you search around.

But this library may come with some baggage. Mr. Bush's popularity has plummeted as the war in Iraq has faltered, and his administration's tactics in the fight against terrorism have been challenged by civil libertarians.

The president has also proposed creating a think tank, an idea that doesn't sit well with some SMU professors. This week they began circulating a letter calling for more open discussion about the library and its would-be role on campus.

What's "murky" at this point, said political science professor Cal Jillson, is what Mr. Bush has in mind for his think tank and how that would relate to the university.

"They need to understand what the institute is going to be," Dr. Jillson said. "I think SMU needs to understand and will seek to clarify what the president has in mind."

8. '...will seek to clarify what the president has in mind."
He will be unable to clarify anything. This isn't his idea.

6. SMU needs to worry ... if they don't acquiesce, Bush might
use eminent domain and just take the land ...
