URGENT: Administration pushes for thousands of new nukes--Say no today
Urge the Administration Not to Build New Nuclear Weapons

Dear DU,

The Bush administration is proposing to rebuild the entire U.S. nuclear arsenal, recreating the type of design, development, and production capability for nuclear weapons used in the United States during the Cold War. Fortunately, a mandatory environmental impact review of the Bush administration’s so-called “Complex 2030” proposal allows you to submit comments on this dangerous plan. Send a letter telling the administration to abandon its plans to produce thousands of new nuclear weapons and instead focus on cutting the already oversized U.S. nuclear arsenal.

Comments are due by January 17, so please send your letter today.

Sincerely,

Stephen Young
National Field Organizer
Global Security Program

Send a letter to the following decision maker(s):
Theodore A. Wyka, Complex 2030 SEIS Document Manager

Subject: Tell the Administration Not to Build New Nuclear Weapons

Dear Mr. Wyka,

The current Complex 2030 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is too limited. The EIS should include assessment of an alternative that would abandon plans to build new nuclear weapons, make deep reductions in the U.S. nuclear stockpile, and consolidate existing nuclear weapons facilities to the greatest extent possible.

Under this option, managing the U.S. nuclear stockpile will be more efficient, less costly, and more consistent with the goal of reducing U.S. reliance on nuclear weapons.

Also, as part of the review, the Department of Energy should prepare a nonproliferation impact assessment of Complex 2030 to determine how the plan would affect the U.S. goal of stopping the spread of nuclear weapons, and whether the project is consistent with U.S. treaty obligations to eliminate nuclear weapons.

Sincerely,
Your name

programs. He doesn't believe in nuclear weapons and doesn't believe that SPACE should be militarized at all.

Thanks for drawing attention to this issue - it doesn't come up enough, imo. Too many Dems are afraid to say their against nuclear weapon programs, imo.

11. Oh, how soon we forget...
Rumsfeld got everyone in a tizzy just a few years ago when he was calling for testing of "smaller" nuclear weapons testing. 'Nuclear bunker busters', IIRC. It lasted for about a week in the news cycle, then went into the dark.

From May 2003: http://www.cns.miis.edu/pubs/week/030528.htm

Revitalized Nuclear Weapons Complex
Increased Nuclear Testing Readiness

In addition to the Administration's plans to research low-yield nuclear weapons, the Administration is taking other steps to mobilize the U.S. nuclear weapons complex. Currently, the nuclear weapons laboratories require about three years in order to prepare for a full-scale nuclear weapons test at the Nevada Test Site. Plans are underway to cut that preparation time in half to 18 months or perhaps as low as 12 months.<8> Although the Bush Administration does not support the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty's ratification, it does continue to maintain the testing moratorium. For the time being, an increase in test readiness does not imply that the United States will renew full scale nuclear testing. While the United States has not conducted a full nuclear test since 1992, it has performed several subcritical experiments in which no explosive nuclear chain reaction can occur, or even be closely approached. Keeping the time needed to prepare a new nuclear weapon test longer than one year is vital, because it requires at least one budget cycle in which Congress could act to disapprove such a test.

To support the revitalized posture of the nuclear weapons complex, the Administration has requested a substantial 8.2% increase in the FY 2004 budget for the Stockpile Stewardship program that maintains the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear arsenal. The total program's annual budget would climb to $6.378 billion.<9> This amount is greater than the Cold War peak yearly spending on nuclear testing.<10>
...

Now, can we also talk about the shipment of weapons that went to Israel during the recent conflict with Lebanon? So, we have testing by the US and Israel drawing plans to use nuclear bunker busters on Iran. hmmmm...

22. No more new nukes! why can't people see this as the idiotic spending spree that it is?...
This move does nothing toward making America or the World safer. Revamping this arsenal only serves a few billionaires (the shrub's true base of support) by creating a new way to transfer funds to them out of the public trust.
