Democrats pass 9-11 Bill with VETO-PROOF VOTE of 299-128

GILLIBRAND-PELOSI TEAM NOW LEADING UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

House easily passes anti-terror bill

WASHINGTON (AP) — Anti-terror legislation sailed through the House on Tuesday, the first in a string of measures designed to fulfill campaign promises made by Democrats last fall.

Patterned on recommendations of the commission that investigated the Sept. 11 attacks, the far-reaching measure includes commitments for inspection of all cargo carried aboard passenger aircraft and on ships bound for the United States.

The vote was a bipartisan 299-128

"This bill will waste billions of dollars, and possibly harm homeland security by gumming up progress already underway," said Rep. Hal Rogers, R-Ky.

...

In a written statement, the Bush administration listed several objections and said it could not support the measure as drafted but stopped short of a veto threat.

Democrats have pledged to make fiscal responsibility a priority in the new Congress, but they advanced the bill — their first of the year — without even a bare-bones accounting of the estimated cost. The funding will require follow-up legislation.

Legislation introduced in the Senate a year ago to implement the recommendations of the 9/11 commission had a price tag of more than $53 billion over five years.

16. What a Joke
The Republicans were the ones who kept the 9/11 bill from going through before, & they took homeland security money away from the cities. So they have no right to complain. At least the Democrats are doing something. And people think the Republicans are better at protecting the country than Democrats? Doesn't look like it to me.

15. Assuming the Senate passes it, Chimpy's signing statement on this one would probably be a record.
There's no way he's going to take it without some kind of tantrum.

6. Well, it's a start, now re-investigate 9-11 and remove the gag-order from Sibel Edmunds!!
The American people must know the truth Edmunds had revealed to the FBI regarding 9-11 intel causing her to be fired and gag-ordered by Ashcroft!

13. republicons now whining that dems doing what they would not
Who the hell were the republicons protecting?

They sure as hell were not protecting America on 9/11, when they failed the nation so miserably.

They can just shut up and sit down, stuff their whining crybaby ways.

24. Right now, anti-terrorism legislation
doesn't impress me, especially since the "war on terror" was largely a power grab and the 9/11 commission largely a whitewash. But a promise is a promise I guess.

25. $53 billion over five years is a drop in the bucket
...compared to the $110 billion expected to be spent on Bush**'s terrorist-breeding Iraq occupation this year alone. And in return we'll IMPROVE our national security. How can this be a bad thing?

Want to un-gum the process and save money? Abolish the DHS.
