1. Saw it
I liked it and although it was slow in spots and Damon's acting was a bit bland, the story was good and plausible I thought. There were some good lines it. I was expecting DeNiro to hit a little harder, but all in all, he did a good job.

I would probably recommend it more for a quite evening at home when it comes out on DVD; the couch is much more comfortable for an almost 3 hour movie :)

2. Interesting story line, but found the movie too boring.....
tedious and slow for me. Best part was the investigative skills they used in determining the location of video footage. Worse part was the fact that instead of bringing down a plane, they opt to throw the Black woman out of the plane window to eliminate her. As a Black woman, that was offensive that in essence, she wasn't worth the price tag of a small engine plane! :(

Most unbelievable? That back in the 1960's, wealthy families wouldn't have a second thought about anyone that wasn't White marrying into the family.

I tried to answer you without giving away too much. Hope it worked! ;)

13. Now that you mention it, I am surprised that there was nothing said about the
interracial relationship. Perhaps that scene made it to the editing room floor? The woman was pushed from the airplane because she was spying for the wrong people and the Russians wanted to get rid of her. The airplane ride made a very convenient way of getting rid of her.

25. I know......but a lot of times, they don't just push people out of planes
when they are trying to pay a spy back.....they just down the whole plane.

As for the interracial relationship.....yes, I found it odd that no one batted an eyes at that, even as they were waiting at the chapel. :eyes:

3. It was depressing and not great on women's roles. They mostly died or were miserable.
Angelina Jolie was limited to standing and screeching. The other women were limited as well to being miserable or dying violently.

The point of this movie was that the genesis of the CIA was in the old boys club of Yale's Skull and Bones Club. They were of the "right character" to take over the world after WWII. So their existence was justified again and again through disasters of policies (Bay of Pigs) and no matter what, they just went on with their awful plans.

It's not a good picture!

4. I saw it. Long, slow, boring.
They could have cut out a few of the Skull & Bones meetings and saved a half hour of time....

Couple of good lines in the movie but wasn't worth the square-ass I received from sitting soo long in an uncomfortable movie theater seat.

The movie could have been better.

5. We saw it and thought it was wonderful.
It is long and required a lot of attention, so if you're half-snookered or looking to laugh, pick something else. We we enthralled the entire time. Damon was like we've never seen him before. He is exactly what one would expect from a bureaucrat spy, not James Bond, but someone who believed in what he was doing and let everything else in his life go by the wayside. It's hard to imagine people actually live like this- and a little bit sa. He ruined the lives of most whom he touched- his wife, his love, his son. There was so much going on in the film. You see how he gets involved in the CIA in the very beginning of the CIA, you follow his career, his personal life and the effects his choices make on his personal life- and some interesting lines spoken that certainly reflect on today's situation, without beating it over your head.

I would highly recommend it, and I never recommend movies, particularly not ones that cost $10 (where I live) to see.

I wrote a thread on it in the Lounge. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=6025104

8. Should I see it at the theater or wait for the DvD?
That's the only question I have about it. I do expect it to be released fairly quickly.

11. It was long
but I really didn't notice the length while watching it. It was the first movie I ever went alone to and I enjoyed it a lot. Excellent performances by all and it is complicated. I still have not figured out the last scene so I need to see it again. I would certainly recommend to see it at the theater, it was that good.

12. Personally, I'd say the theater. I focus better in the theater without the
distraction of home. You will need to focus.

6. Heard it was very similiar to the story of Bush and his cronies
in the CIA where a sinister group gets in there and starts controlling the US.

Heard it was outstanding

23. It's very much about the WASPy power structure
that has had a stranglehold on our country for decades.
The movie captures the attitudes and the arrogance of the people who start "the little wars". Their sense of being better than anyone else permeates the movie. It's as though Cheney, Rove, and Bush ooze their slime on every frame.

7. Good but long
Could have been a little bit faster-moving, but I did enjoy it. If you're worried about running length being an issue then wait till it comes on DVD. But otherwise, it's worth the cost of admission, even if it's not perfect.

10. No-one picked up on there never was a cold war with Russia - that it was
fabricated by the US. while the the US. knew that Russia simply had no replacement parts for their missiles, artillery etc. It was only a ploy to instill the fear factor for Americans.

Really, this movie makes you paranoid that everything in the country is run by Bonesmen.

24. Presott Bush - George H.W.Bush - and George W. Bush were/are all Bonesmen...
Both Bush and Kerry declined to answer any questions about Skull and Bones when being interviewed by Tim Russert.

16. Joe Pesci's bigotted character said...
"You know, we Italians have our families and the church, the Irish have the homeland, the Jews their tradition, the niggers their music. What do you guys have?"

I didn't like that quote at all. But I know it was just a movie and I know DeNiro is a good director and actor. It fit the part or else he would have cut that scene out.

21. Pesci's quote says it all
the Bush and Co. arrogance and entitlement. "We have the United States. The rest of you are just visiting."
And don't think that is not what they all believe.
You only have to spend a few minutes listening to Barbara Bush.

19. My son worked on the movie...
as a locations assistant. Had lots of good stories to tell about the filming. He actually got to watch the Rose Bowl last year with the director and DeNiro. (obviously I'm impressed with all the people he gets to work with in the movies he works on)

22. If you go see it, take some No-Doz with a double espresso chaser first!
The Good Shepherd is probably one of the WORST movies I have seen this year. Boring. Dry. Choppy. A royal squandering of Matt Damon's craft. If you throw away $8.00 to sit through what amounts to the cinematic equivalent of watching paint dry, don't say I didn't warn you.

26. And I thought that Babel was the worse movie in 2006.....
Cause I'm still trying to figure out what the Japanese School girl starving for love and sex in bigh city Japan had to do with a couple vacationing in North Africa....apart from the fact that it was her father who gave the gun to the Morocan who in turn gave it to the little boys who shot at the bus thinking that the bullets wouldn't travel that far.

Plus Babel also made me worry that if I hire a Mexican babysitter, my kids will be found in the Mexican Desert near death if I wasn't able to get back when I said I would.

So I thought that Babel took the cake in the "Worst movie" category for me.
