How do you feel about the adds on progressive radio ?
I do fully realize they need sponsors to keep going and I do listen to liberal radio shows .

But what I find disturbing are the commercials that are about becoming a millionair over night or the ones about those who invest 500,000 are high hitters . Then there are the commercials that you find in your email almost daily like making 6 figures while you sleep . You know the ones .

As a broke liberal these trouble me alot . It's a shame we can't have more reasonable commercials on these shows , at least something obtainable for those who can afford something .

Buy gold and the jerk repeats gold 11 times , I know , out of bordom I counted and he stresses the word "gold" in such a gutteral freaky way .

1. As long as it helps them stay on the air, I don't give a damn what ads they play.

2. those spots
are bulk network, "space avail" buys (english translation: i'll pay you to run these in places that you no one else has paid you to run a commercial). All network radio shows have crap like this running underneath but in many cases they get pre-empted by local spots.

3. agree with above
but saying that I'd like to strangle the lady who advertises for homebiz 6 or whatever it is, who is now making a 6 figure income stuffing envelopes or what ever the hell they do...and I'm really having bad thoughts about Oprah. (those on XM will know what I'm talking about.)

4. I can't stand them - but then again, I despise all ads...for whatever
reason, the AM radio adds are all for various snake oil BS. My other beef is the ratio of content to ads - seems like you get 50% information, 50% advertising! So I do listen when I am in the car, but switch to NPR during the ads.

5. If it helps them stay solvent, I'm okay with it
I wish they would at least change the ad with the lady who makes $100,000 a year in her pajamas, but at least
it's better than the ones they used to have on Air America for Glenn Beck.
Unfortunately, they have to pay their bills and can't be choosy.

6.  I guess I should just try to ignore them
As I said I know they need funding and I should not care what they run and for the most part I don't . They just drive me nuts and I should be able to handle nuts , after all we do live in a surreal freaky world now . Commercials always made me nuts so I had to bitch a bit .

7. I'll bet the commercials are worse on wingnut radio. Why don't
you check them out there?

8. The ads are needed
The problem is with the local stations. If they don't have staff selling local ads, they run the "bulk" ads and PSA's. Some of the stations that dumped progressive format either put no effort into making it work or were openly against promoting it. When the ownership of the station is part of a larger operation they reduce the local staff and centralize marketing and sales staff. Two examples of stations who are doing it right are KPHX and KRXA they have people locally doing what they can to promote the station and format to local business. I thought it was great to listen to political ads on KRXA before the election when some RW nut-bag paid for saturation advertising and you knew where he stood in 30 seconds. Thanks for the donation sucker! I could picture people driving to work either laughing their ass off or screaming at the radio.

Some of us may have the time and interest to search out or pay for alternative views, but the problem is all those other people. They deserve the chance to have their thinking challenged. The best way to do that is on the "public airwaves" to reach the most people. It may not be much fun dealing with the ads, but it beats the alternative.
