Lieberman on Surge: What’s “The Worst that Could Happen”?

Over the weekend, I caught a snippet of CSPAN’s coverage of the McCain/Lieberman “surge” party at the American Enterprise Institute. It was after all the speeches, with the Senators kibitzing with reporters as the hour ran down.

In words that should trouble any Democrats counting Lieberman in their camp, Lieberman was praising Bush as a “great leader” for bucking American opinion, as expressed in the 2006 election, in his determination to double down in Iraq. Lieberman then said something incredible:

Even those opposed to the surge, he said, “ought to at least let us try it.”

“The worst that could happen,” he continued, is that this policy could become another partisan flashpoint in Washington.

Anticipating the new line, Sen. Joe Lieberman (Independent-CT) referred to "Iran and al-Qaida" on Wolf Blitzer's Sunday program on CNN. That Iran is Shiite and al-Qaida Sunni becomes irrelevant in the new game plan that will most probably lead to U.S. air strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities in 2007/08. Can a Democratic Congress be bypassed under a blanket authorization already secured to hunt down transnational terrorists wherever they may be hiding?

Actually, maybe we should make anyone who votes for a war sign a pledge to enlist themselves and their children for combat duty. Might change some opinions.

15. I am glad he no longer belongs to us
the Democrats who make up the rank and files...the ones you see in the grocery store. We have washed our hands of him....apparently just in time since Leiberman is now against 88% of America.

Sure, some politicians suck up to Leiberdweeb out of necessity and patronage, but his verbal offal no longer sticks to the Democrats. If anything, the Lamont campaign has given us that....clean hands.

16. Here's what we should do...
For every casualty that takes place after Bush and LIEberman's escalation, write the name of the dead American on a piece of paper, add the words "This is the worst that could happen" and send it to Joe's DC office. Flood this bastard with mail. Let him know there's blood on his hands.

28. There's Joe's mentality. His worst nightmare is
that Democrats and Republicans might bicker. He's lost all sight of everything outside the Beltway. To him, the personal relationships of the 100 Senators are more important than the 3000 dead Americans in Iraq, the hundred fifty thousand soldiers stuck in Iraq, the hundreds of billions of dollars wasted, or the three hundred million Americans that might have had some use for that money in hospitals or schools.

Joe doesn't seem to care about anything or anyone outside his life as a Senator. I wish he had been brought back into the real world last November.

32. The worst that could happen?
(1) A lot more American troops killed and wounded; and no end in sight.

(2) A lot more Iraqis killed, and the country becomes still more of a nightmare of sectarian violence.

(3) Increase in world terrorism, and all the deaths that may result from that.

(4) More people dying unnecessarily if there are more disasters like Katrina, as the troops will all be abroad.

And a lot more deaths and disasters. Is Lieberman nuts? Even if he thinks that the worst that can happen is political rows, you'd think he would have the sense not to say so.

33. I like the way he stands his ground
unlike all the cut and run former bush cheerleaders. Now that the war is not popular, they want to cut and run.

For the record, I always supported don't go, so you won't need to cut and run.

Now we are in for a penny, and in for a pound.
