"Very, very disappointed"...GOP leaders whining in disappointment. Great editorial.
Their whiny, cry-baby attitude got noticed by our paper. They called them out on it, and I love it. The editorial even blasted my congressman, 3rd in line in the GOP House leadership...they usually pamper him to death.

Very, Very Disappointed

The Republicans wanted to be clear. They were disappointed.

"We are disappointed," said U.S. Rep. Adam Putnam of Bartow.

"We're clearly disappointed," said Rep. Roy Blunt of Missouri.

"I'm disappointed, as are some others," echoed Rep. Key Granger of Texas.

"I am very disappointed," sighed David Dreier of California.

Why were these forlorn Republicans so dejected?

Because, said Putnam, the Democrats "missed an opportunity to really change the way that the House does business."

Do not miss this editorial. It is a powerful one.

Congressman Adam Putnam, Florida's District 12, is so very very disappointed

1. Great article. GOP is so foreign to negotiation. They still want to be
handed power even after their abuses.

27. This is not about tit for tat. This is about saving the mf'ing country, if not the planet. The
Dems are not doing this to 'get back' at the Repugs, but because they genuinely don't trust them not to muck up the implementation of desperately needed changes that are so long over due, the goals of the first 100 hours, etc. Give Repugs an inch and they'll take a mile — we all know that. So let's not pretend that we're talking about two sides of the same coin. While Dems champion the little guy, the poor, and the middle class, for peace, economic justice, the right to unionize, and so on, Repugs seek to benefit only themselves and their cronies and donors. There's no comparison.

45. Spot on. Absolutely right. It's not about revenge. Ignition of all
kinds is as pivotal to our industrial societies as oil, itself, but when you're trying to rebuild a house your children have half-destroyed by fire, before the bad weather closes in, you just don't leave matches around within their reach; and you don't have them playing around in it, delaying the construction work with their questions and their need to be always watched.

The Republicans were totally arrogant when they were in power. They need to learn what it is like to be treated like shit. I am still waiting for some Republican to come whining to me.

5. Putnam might have added that it really is business as usual in Congress:

The majority party is moving its agenda forward without paying much attention to those in the minority.

Only this time, the shoe was pinching another minority party and Putnam and his sorely disappointed colleagues were wearing it.

Hurtz don't it?

7. yep, you republicans were "dis - appointed"
In addition to "powerful," as the OP says, funny!

What is it with that word "disappointed?" Politicians use it all the time. It implies "you let me down." Well, big deal, at least in this case. Like the opposiiton party should now tenderly stroke the sensitive feelings of republicans?

The writer makes it clear the republicans would have nothing of the kind when they were in power:

During a press conference Thursday, Putnam offered his "missed opportunity" remark about more inclusion. Rick Klein of the Boston Globe, referring to Pelosi's 2004 attempt at that same inclusion, asked, "What stopped you from taking that opportunity when you were still in the majority?"

Putnam quickly tiptoed away from that mine field: "Well, I'll let Chairman Dreier speak to that."

But he eventually tiptoed back to say: "The important point here is that the American people were promised a new way of doing business in the 110th Congress. There was clearly a high level of frustration in the heartland about the way people viewed the workings and procedures in this building, and they were promised a fresh approach, a fresh start."

Love that word "tiptoed."

Cher

18. Good to know about that last part -- I hope he is seething
& as frustrated as they made the Democrats feel.

The change the American people were looking for had nothing to do with Democrats folding at the Rethugs' pleasure. If we had our way, the Rethugs' leadership positions for this country would go no higher than the jobs they make available to us -- with the same amount of stagnated pay & evaporating benefits (if they're lucky to get them at all).

Yeah, right. Nancy and Harry will jump right on that, I'm sure.

what is beginning to really get my goat is that i keep on being shocked at how damnably low they went. that was really really blatant. another incident i happened to hear on c-span was when alberto gonzales was going to testify (i think re: wiretaps) and the dems wanted him sworn in. the republican doing the honors or whatever just sanpped, "we have the votes he will not be sworn in." and the asshole proceeded to sit down and spew bullshit....

39. That seems to be a pretty clear admission that Gonzales was planning to lie,
and the Congressional rethugs both knew it and intended to protect him from any legal snags.

Was Putnam’s action illegal? I’d certainly think so.

But regardless, according to C&L bloggers, a recorded vote was later taken and the ayes won out over the nays. So Putnam’s misrepresentation of the voice vote didn’t get to stand.

Remember what happened last time Democrats tried to "do what was best for the country and put partisanship aside". The symbol for the Republican party should be the scorpion. Because no matter how nice you are to a scorpion, it will always sting, every time. That's what scorpions and Republicans do. Crush them.

Edited on Sun Jan-07-07 11:23 PM by depakid
THE number one biggest mistake the Dems could do is to give in to the far right and let them have whine and weasel their way back to the table. NOTHING good will come of that.

I've known more than a few battered women both profesionally and through aquaintences, and it's always the same pattern: the abuser's "forgiven," let back in and eventually proceeds to abuse again. If Republicans have proven one thing over the past 12 years is that they're not trustworthy, and have only their own corrupt interests at heart.

Don't become a battered leader, Madam Speaker.
