There's been alot of heavy wind the past couple of nights.

Perhaps that is it.

But lots of loud snaps and pops or clicks in the house that Ive never heard before.

At least in the 6 years I've lived here.

Quien sabe?

1. Could be the heater
warming up the place, amd/or rain... is that L.A. or LA?

2. Los Angeles. But its not the heater.
I've never heard clicks coming from all areas of the house.

8. Hi Shanti. I had an interesting occurence last night that I thought
activated my dogs. Am not sure what did, but something stressed them out. In truth I guess it could have been anything. Im not sure what activated and/or made them concerned/and/or worried.

They are fine right now. Sleeping.

9. They are - - my cats went psycho the day before the Northridge quake
They ran around, yowling and demanding to go out. I opened the door and they ran away like they were escaping a fire or being chased by a huge dog.

They came back the next day after the main shocks were over. I was basically stranded in the house with them for three days while the aftershocks continued. I had the radio on all through it, and I discovered that the cats would get very tense and scared right before any aftershock that was greater than 4.0. They would sleep through aftershocks of 4.0 or less - - or if they were awake, they'd barely glance in mild interest at the house shaking around them.

I had two cats back then, and they've both since passed away.

I have one cat now and she's acting normal. Well, normal for a cat. ;)

24. So did MY cat the day before Northridge. I remember it quite clearly.
He spent the day traversing the house while trying never to touch the floor (as if it was hot, or boiling!)

He'd jump from table, to couch, to counter, etc. etc.

17. The theory is that animals respond to "infrasonics"
The theory is that animals respond to "infrasonics"; very, very
low sound frequencies that they don't necessarily hear but may
instead feel through their feet.

There's also a lot of electrifying (sorry) work going on in
investigating both changes in the electric field before
earthquakes and massive emissions of infrared light
before an earthquake (which can be detected by satellites
in orbit). Scientists are starting to actually be hopeful that
earthquake prediction (with lead times of hours to days)
will soon become a practical reality.

Source: New Scientist magazine a few months back.

5. Not the heater itself, but the house as it warms.
If there's been a lot of temperature or moisture fluctuations from rain and/or wind it's more likely to happen than normally, also if you have a wood frame building.

Just my $.02

4. There's a website of a guy who supposedly is good at predicting/assessing
when there will be an earthquake. http://www.syzygyjob.com/

I live in L.A. as well and that wind was a teeny bit scary. I think that's the strongest I've ever seen it. My cable is still out, and I had to miss Countdown today. :(

It may just be shifts.

10. Had that happening here
Lived in the same side by side duplex for five years, and had never heard it until this past fall. I thought it was the electric receptacles snapping too. I finally realized it sounded like the roof shifting. It was frequent and loud; something I'd never heard before. The next door neighbor said he'd been wondering about it also. There was no wind blowing whenever it happened. I then noticed one end of the cement porch floor sinking. The windows were warping, and became hard to open on that side.

Weird that a house would be settling when it was built in 1985.

PS..This is in Iowa

16. no nuclear tests
I'm in SE Iowa. We are in the area of the New Madris fault. I noticed a lot of my neighbors porches where one whole corner had cracked all the way through, but never asked if they'd had the noises.

Oh well, I moved in October. The whole place is probably getting ready to drop into a giant sinkhole.

23. lots of settling of houses here in North Calif-due to rain?? or earth movement?
Last winter we had rain clear until May. My BF's, my old house (1963), my new house (1915) and the houses of many of my friends show many new settling cracks over the last year.

I have no clue if it is due to the long and late rainfall last spring or if there are some very deep slow ground movements. Only time will tell......

12. OK... here is a list of test questions...
Is your house on stilts in the Hollywood Hills?

Have you seen this guy driving a large pickup with a bunch of chains near your house?

do you have diplomatic immunity and a ship container full of 100 dollar bills?

Are you Jewish?

If you answered yes to more than one of the questions, then evacuate immediately!!!

15. Nope in the valley. The hills are actually primarily on rock and don't move as much.
So Ive been told.

I think it's true.

With that said, my house made it through 94 without any real damage.

The only house that had signficant damage was across the street and it is older than most houses on the block.

Edited on Sat Jan-06-07 09:54 AM by OnionPatch
I didn't know what they were so I googled them and boy am I sorry I did that.......The New World Order people are spraying us with chemicals to make us sick or apathetic??? How many people out there believe this? Sounds like a rightwing conspiracy theory.

Edited to add: I just saw the last post: (BWAHAAAHAAAA HAAA HA) and I'm sure glad that was a joke.

It's quite scary the number of our own who believe that claptrap.

It sure makes me wonder if I want to be here THIS SUMMER!

28. It is odd weather here
Edited on Sat Jan-06-07 12:59 PM by blues90
We have rain then the winds kick up at night almost like clockwork . We have lousy windows that swing in as doors and they clammor and bang . Yesterday I heard alot of loud bangs that I could feel through the building . Even though the lady downstairs in this two story apt building was home and cleaning she is too small to create such loud banging noises and it was not windy during the day . It was as if someone was hitting the building with a large truck and there was no truck to be seen .
I asked my wife if she felt it and she said it was the wind , I said the wind is worse at night and I don;t feel this banging shake .

My one cat is affraid of the wind and hides by the others were also not acting normal either and stayed out of the open areas .

In 1994 jan with the last big quake they vanished before the quake hit .

So who knows what it happening . They did have quakes in northern calif last month and we are all tied to these faults . it has alos been very dry here too .
