Molly Ivins: STOP THIS WAR, NOW!
Published on Friday, January 5, 2007 by truthdig
Stop This War, Now!
by Molly Ivins

The president of the United States does not have the sense God gave a duck—so it’s up to us. You and me, Bubba.

I don’t know why Bush is just standing there like a frozen rabbit, but it’s time we found out. The fact is we have to do something about it. This country is being torn apart by an evil and unnecessary war, and it has to be stopped now.

This war is being prosecuted in our names, with our money, with our blood, against our will. Polls consistently show that less than 30 percent of the people want to maintain current troop levels. It is obscene and wrong for the president to go against the people in this fashion. And it’s doubly wrong for him to send 20,0000 more soldiers into this hellhole, as he reportedly will announce next week.

What happened to the nation that never tortured? The nation that wasn’t supposed to start wars of choice? The nation that respected human rights and life? A nation that from the beginning was against tyranny? Where have we gone? How did we let these people take us there? How did we let them fool us?

7. "This will be a regular feature of mine..."
That's the only way we're going to stop it. We all have to focus on this and force our government to stop, at least our participation, in this slaughter of innocents.

8. Well they sure don't have the troops...I heard this right-wing caller about
Edited on Fri Jan-05-07 05:11 PM by GreenTea
a while back bitching about the US military only having 130K troops in Iraq (No, it was planned bullshit by Rumsfeld & the rest to keep the war going) this same idiot freeper was quoting shit right from the pigman, saying we had over 500K troops in Iraq during "Desert Storm" when pappy Bush was in office, and because of Clinton ruining the military we now only have 130K or so to send to Iraq...It's such disgusting misinformation it's almost funny...Now that Bush can barely get 8 or 9K more troops together for his phony "Surge"...

It's a smokescreen that's being exposed for what it is...A way for BushCo to say, "give us a chance with our "Surge" (really meaning, just let us keep this war for profit going)...Remember if the Dem's cave in with this phony surge & the new change of military brass that Bush just announced today, whicj of course is simply a ploy to get funding to prolong Bush's war for profit...

Fuck the kids fighting & dying in Iraq, that's their tough luck, profits need to be made from our tax dollars & oil...The congressional funding for Iraq will be for a full year...So Rove and the rest of the criminals will have a year to think up reason's for funding for Bush's final year of the eight years of unheard of profits.

Another 9-11 type terrorist attack in the US?....Yes, and then they can expand the war for profit into Iran....they've been just itching to do it, a perfect excuse...think of all the wonderful profits Bushco and the corporations will make then...And the corporate media, oh the media will love it!

11. bush has had six years to build up his army
What is taking him so long? Couldn't be that the available people don't believe his sorry as* and are not about to be a sacrificial lamb.

12. She should be patient, and wait for it to come up in Congress. Later this year. Maybe by Labor day
Edited on Fri Jan-05-07 05:51 PM by Tom Joad
yeah, i know, Dems are saying they will oppose an escalation. But what about the troops coming home? what about the 150,000 that are there now?

I hear no plan to make sure they come home (except Jim McGovern's defunding bill, that the leadership opposes)

Ending the war may be the agenda of the American people, but its go slow for congress.

15. YEE HAW! Molly's back!
I figured she'd have something to say about and to the 110th Congress. I also like her saying that she'll be trumpeting this same theme over and over in the future.

It's nice to hear Molly talk about the future. I hope she's around to kick pols in the butt for a long, long time.

Get well, Molly. We need ya!

Usually she makes her points with humor.. but in this case the humor ended with the duck statement.

There is a time for rage ...

We, the People....and Bubba...have got to make our Representatives do as we want. They're not our leaders; they're our Representatives. We put them there and they need to abide by our will.

23. gotta love Molly....
....and if you're military you need to start asking yourself,'...why am I fighting and dieing?'....

....are you fighting for American corporate dominance and our ruling fascists or are you fighting for the American people and their freedoms?....they are not the same thing....

....they could share a common mission but it's not in Iraq and it's highly unlikely....

26. Thanks Molly.
You're always saying what I'm thinking. Such good points:

-What happened to the nation that never tortured?

-The nation that wasn’t supposed to start wars of choice?

-The nation that respected human rights and life?

-A nation that from the beginning was against tyranny?

I'll tell ya what happen Molly, 'we' (you know who) fucking sold and sometimes forced all our secrets of capitalism on the rest of the world and now they are throwing it right back in our faces.

America?

Was a land of endless possibilities, now outsourced for 13 cents an hour.

Stick a fork in us, we're done.

31. Great.
Except for: The Democrats have yet to offer a cohesive plan to get us out of this mess.

Murtha sure as hell has...as have Pelosi/Reid. Depends what she expects when she demands a "cohesive" plan.

34. NOW-already. Enough is enough!
Before the war started I placed a NO WAR (coated cardboard sign the size of a political campaign sign) in front of my house. A friend gave me two of them. My second one is so tattered and weathered but I refuse to take it down until these war criminals bring our military home!

35. Molly is great
She also tried to warn everybody before Bush stole his first election, that Bush was not qualified for the job. It's a pity that not enough people heeded that warning. If the votes for Gore had been overwhelming enough, I don't think that the Fla. manipulations would have been possible. WE know that Gore won. Not enough people listened to her before, but I hope that everybody will now. The war has to end now, and Bush/Cheney have to go.
