4. The story gets worse and worse.
Just like everything during this maladministration: the beginning story is always at least a little iffy, then as more information is gathered, it turns into a complete travesty.

5. I think she was referring to the Green Zone in Baghdad. That's
what I read but later it was referred to as a base. Confusing though.

9. Camp Justice is not in the GZ
It's near the airport, I believe. And yes, Randi's correct, it is an American base.

6. Sure.
They also rushed the execution before the Democrats took congress. So that Bush could "take credit for it."

8. it WAS inside an american base! jeeze...
"The final hour of Iraq's former ruler began about 5 a.m. Saturday, when American troops escorted him from Camp Cropper, near the Baghdad airport, to another American base at the heart of the city, Camp Justice.

There, he was handed over to a newly trained unit of the Iraqi National Police, with whom he would later exchange curses. Iraq took full custody of Mr. Hussein at 5:30 a.m.

Two American helicopters flew 14 witnesses from the Green Zone to the execution site – a former headquarters of the deposed government's much feared military intelligence outfit, the Istikhbarat, now inside the American base. "

14. a 'newly trained unit of the iraqi national police' in an occupied country,
are just an extension of the occupiers.

why the pretense? bush wanted him dead, he invaded his country, he orchestrated the court, he orchestrated the hanging. just admit it already.

26. That jumped out at me as well. So THIS is how our tax dollars are
being spent..to train people who behave just as jihadists?
THESE are the people who are supposed to 'stand up so that we can stand down'??
Nauseating and hopeless.

13. on the first video I watched I think it was the cell phone one too
they focused on the stairs going up to the gallows and they were made from steel treadplate like something we would use as stair treads not what they would likely use or in my mind anyway. the person filming stopped on the stair tread so a person would have to see that. So now I wonder if she may be right

17. Even the gallows was made in the USA
A VIEW TO A KILL ON U.S.-MADE GALLOWS

December 27, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - A bit of good old American craftsmanship will bring about Saddam Hussein's end - a specially constructed gallows that might as well be stamped "Made in the U.S.A."

The custom-made gallows for Saddam is located in a highly secure U.S. military prison at Baghdad airport called Camp Cropper, where the former Iraqi dictator is currently imprisoned.

(snip)

Obviously, some of these predictions were not to be.

Like other Iraqi death-row prisoners, Saddam will be dressed in an orange uniform, and a hood will be placed over his head before his execution. He will be allowed prayers, and a last meal, according to U.S. officials. Then the ex-tyrant will be taken to the American-made gallows, where a handful of Iraqi government officials, U.S. military officers and human-rights officials will be witnesses.

(snip)

Saddam will not be permitted to make a final speech, an American lawyer who advised the special tribunal that tried him told The Post.

Only a still photograph will mark the occasion of the death of the dictator.

"There's a very good chance that this will all come very quickly - that we will wake up in the next day or two and find out Saddam has already been executed and we will see nothing but a photograph marking the end of Saddam," said Michael Scharf, a professor at Case Western University in Cleveland who advised the tribunal.

That place used to be one of Saddam's torture prisons before the invasion. The US took it over, called it Camp Banzai at one point, before changing the name again to Camp Justice. At some point last year (?), it was handed over to the Iraqi Defense Forces - or mainly anyway. I think that there is still a small US contingent still operating in some form or another. I wonder if the fact that the facility was once used to torture and kill opponents to Saddam's regime came into play in the selection of the site? Sort of a "poetic justice" type of thing?

Edit to add: I think that for the most part it sounds like "Camp Justice" is now mainly under Iraqi control.
