Is Obama ready for Presidency
Edited on Wed Jan-03-07 01:08 AM by illinoisprogressive
Is the lack of experience something that is a serious hinderance to governing?

3. Obama is ready for anything and surely more ready than the cokehead
-- except for the infrastructure which may be the deal killer.

6. On all the talk shows, they discussed that the current admin. had
the most experience (of any) in Nat'l Security and look how that turned out. Both sides agreed, that any Dem. Candidate will bring that up. I know that you were not limiting that question to the Nat'l Security discussion, however, I think that argument would work for other issues.

For the Corporatists the saying goes, a Good Leader will surround himself with good talent. I think Obama is certainly smarter than most of the other potential candidates, and is probably beholding to few, which is what I think the public is looking for. Oh, and yes, he is quite a good speaker, I don't know about his debating skills.

15. Agreed
A point I have made in several threads over the last few months. If this is what we get with such an "experienced" team then let's get anyone else to do the job..... And Yes, we have lots of time to sort out the candidates, the more the better!

8. I think Obama has everything it takes to be President
and then some. It would be fantastic to have him as President as opposed to the freakin' moron who is currently holding the job.

9. He's got more experience in public office than Lincoln did.
Obama was elected to the Illinois State Senate; Lincoln was only elected to the Illinois State House. Obama is a Senator and will have 4 years in office; Lincoln was only elected the US House of Representatives for 1 two year term.

When it comes to law practice, Obama only has a little less than half the time as a practicing lawyer. Lincoln was a lawyer for 23 years; Obama was a practicing lawyer for 11-13 years.

***I came up with this, by the way, way before Newt Gingrich. I can prove it too! :-)

10. IMO, we need someone with a military background to nip this shit in the bud.

And McCain is a weird-o. I mean that because I don't 'get' him.
If someone has been involved in a war, don't they usually try to steer clear of it?
Prove me wrong.

11. McCain was against torture for a while too! He's just primping
and preening for the 2008 election. The man has no real moral conviction anymore, he is just shifting as the political landscape is changing for his last run at the presidency.

I think that most of those paying attention have lost respect for him, I have. He is counting on those who are not paying attention, and there are fewer and fewer of them these days.

12. His Intelligence, Thoughtfulness, Wisdom Beyond His Years...
and Decision Making abilities... would far more than make up for any lack of experience; besides, what is called for is simply a well experienced Cabinet and advisors.

13. Perhaps any moderately intelligent individual is ready to be President
if they are backed by a power structure of similarly flexible, intelligent people who are able to listen to each other and make decisions for the greatest good, and to make corrections and admit mistakes when wrong.

It's not so hard (in writing at least).

Of course, this discounts the corporations and moneymen and special interests. Hint hint, this is the problem to solve.

14. Let's hear from him, and find out what he wants to do. Then decide.
Experience is fine, but a shit load of experience by a mediocre person isn't going to make them a dynamic leader in the top job. Ideas, good ones, and an ability to motivate people to do the job are what it takes.

16. No Way!!!
Obama might have the same experience as X, Y and Z. But we are living in different times. The Democratic candidate needs to be a man or woman of considerable experience, either in Washington or as a Governor, to attract the so called security moms and white male electorate in swing states. In fact the 2008 election, like 2004, will be decided by middle Americans, Nixon's silent majority. It is time to face facts, although they do not say much about American society, middle America is not about to put Obama in the White House and will use his lack of experience to mask the fact that they do not want a black President. The 2006 mid-term elections should not be seen as a tipping point in the fortunes of U.S. progressive politics. America is still a very very conservative place (i.e. Dick Cheney is VP and was elected to this position in 2004!). Sorry guys but the likes of Obama and even Edwards with his left of center message are not going to win a Presidential election in a country that has elected W over Kerry, Nixon over McGovern, Bush Snr over Dukakis.
A Gore candidacy is the way forward and I think that even he should play safe when selecting his VP pick. Lieberman was not attractive to middle America, based partially on his religious background. Therefore the Democrats need to be very careful in who they nominate and not misread the 2006 results.

18. Agree: Edwards a no no too
Yeah I agree!! Edwards is not qualified either he lacks experience. Convincing middle americans that he is going to keep them safe is not going to be easy. Don't get me wrong if Edwards still held office he would have a good chance at the nomination but the fact that he is out of office and did not hold it that long in the first place makes him a no no for the White House.
