3. Man, I probably shouldn't have watched that.
This brings up something that a few of us were discussing the other day.

My little town is loaded with vets (mostly Special Forces and Intel) from our little adventure, Monkeyman.

So we were talking about the things that would give us the yips after we came Home.

At least they weren't shit like people walking around a corner on the street or cars parked on the side of the road or dead dogs or heaps of trash or any other urban, every-day sight.

These kids are gonna be in some serious trouble for decades.

9. I know, I know
But I see them in airports and I just do not know what to say, anymore.

At one time, I would talk to them and they would just look at me as if I was some old fool. And I guarantee you that I saw more close quarters combat than these kids will ever see.

I do not know how to communicate with the video-game generation.

But my hat is off to you, Monkeyman. Someone has to keep the Home Fires burning.

5. Thank You
That was difficult to watch, I have no way of understanding how difficult it is to live it. I am saddened that the people who need a heavy dose of reality are the people that never leave their bubble to truly see. My thoughts are with you.

11. My father served on the USS Nautilus (SS-168), a diesel sub, in WWII
He said the more War Patrols a sailor went on, the more likely he would just loose it some time during combat, such as when the crew was being subjected to a depth charge attack. I'm pretty sure he said the Navy even had a formula for it, like X out of 100 depending on the successive number of War Patrols.

I have been thinking that the average soldier these days is serving more combat tours of duty than the troops did during the Vietnam war. I know that the ones who were drafted just had enough time during their 2 year active duty obligation to get trained and serve one 13 month tour. I think today's higher degree of exposure to traumatic experiences should cause us to expect more PTSD problems in these brave men and women who are returning home.

My father was awarded the Submarine Combat Patrol Badge six times. He rested his oar just this November and we laid him to rest on election day.

I am missing him pretty badly right now. He was my best friend. I was lucky to have had him all those years.

Peace to you and yours.

13. My Uncle served on the Nautilus after her conversion to nuc power.
She sleeps in Groton Ct. That boat was the first nuclear powered sub.

16. Your uncle was part of a brave and historic crew
The diesel boat SS-168, however, was decommissioned in Philadelphia on 30 June 1945 and sold for scrap on 16 November of that year.

The nuclear powered Nautilus (SSN-571) was a new boat, and not a conversion of SS-168. She was launched in 1954.

And I see that you too served under the waves as one of those elite sailors. Thank you for your service, Brother.

20. Just a choice of words, Hoot.
Since you are a submariner I know you knew the difference. Nobody really needs to tell you that a modern boomer is a whole different world away from those WWII diesel subs. Have you ever been on a U-boat? I have, there's one at the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago. Quite spartan. My dad was part of the crew that boarded U-858 when Germany surrendered. He said those Germans were good sailors, and said the same of the Japanese.

21. LOL
A modern boomer is a world away from the boomer I rode.

Once, I was inside a 2-man Japaneese sub that had been captured. I've never been in a U-boat but I dove above one once.

There's a sea story about the diesel boat purchased by Iran (during the end of the Shah's rule) which was rocking in the berth one choppy night on the Thames. The story goes that the diving officer had a bright idea to increase the draft a tad to stabilize the boat, and took it a tad too deep with the hatches open, glub, glub.

I do know the Iranians had crews in training on Groton when the Shah fell. My barracks was next to theirs. That was an interesting evening.

There are many good Navies in the world. The Chineese could give us a run for our money later in the century.

14. I went through this once - Vietnam.
This bastard's putting us through it again. All of us who served know what the sacrifice is - and, once again, not what it's for.

I'm hoping a benevolent god or two will provide Shrub with the education he so sorely needs, and obviously did not get at Harvard.
