As when Faux kept identifying Foley as a Dem, this was deliberate. Anybody can look at a freakin keyboard and see that NOBODY would typo "b" for "s."

This is outrageous and completely pre-meditated.

CNN is even worse than FOX because they enjoy a reputation as 'liberal'. Well, they did, at least.

Remember this?

It's a shame that journalism is reduced to this.

136. This is why re-regulation of the Media should be Job 1 for the Dems.
Bush and his cronies rammed thru the changes allowing media consolodation in his first year in the face of bipartisan and popular outcry, but it was THE critical peice of his master plan. Once he controlled the media, he controlled the message. Game over.

No election theft stories. No stories about bogus Iraq info. No troublesome stories about Big Biz writing National policy and cutting checks from the taxpayers checkbook.

We need to break the stronghold on the media.

Ignorant about any language other than English or any other culture other than Christian-European--freaking out if the Koran is used instead of the Bible for swearing in, and even Ted Kennedy got confused and mixed up Obama with Osama. Hopefully we as a country will progress out of our cocoon.

Gotta love that liberal bias. I mean the letter "s" is not anywhere near "b" on a qwerty keyboard. This wasn't just a random keystroke mistake, it was indeed intentional.

22. Here is what I sent them.
Just so you know, Senator Barack Obama is not Osama bin Laden. They don't look alike. They don't think alike. They share no relatives, no common language nor do they have any business connections. Please quit confusing the two. Writing "Where's Obama?" across a picture of Osama bin Laden is shameful.

No wonder Americans are so ignorant of world situations- they have "trusted sources" like CNN informing them.

47. Here's mine:
"I watched "Where's Obama?" flashed over a picture of Osama Bin Laden earlier today.

I'm extremely offended that such bile would appear on a major news network. This couldn't have been a simple typing error either, because "s" and "b" are in very different locations on a qwerty keyboard. If typed with standard hand position, different fingers are used to strike the "s" and "b" keys. If done with a "peck typing" style, the keys are simply located in too different a location to be a mistaken.

I want a public apology aired on all hours of The Situation Room, as well as in a prominent area of your website, so that people will be able to see that this was intentional and that whoever did it is held accountable for their obvious bias."

27. I doubt it was accidental. . .
This is how con-servative propagandists work - if you read their complaints about the media, you'll always see their contention that the media is subtle about "eroding American values." When the mindset of a con-servative ideology is subterfuge, that is exactly the technique they would employ themselves. . .and make it as innocent looking and as subliminal as possible.

I hope someone pointed this error out to CNN. . .and does it in a demanding way.

It's the result of a long-term, conscious attack by the right-wing on the government of the US. They've destroyed our infrastructure including our educational system. It's not solely the fault of the people.

The American far-right and their various international partners in crime are the ones who should be ashamed.

What are the appropriate remedies?
-- Everyone involved in getting this graphic to air loses their job: the creator, the editor, and the producer.
-- CNN airs, multiple times, an apology to Sen. Obama.
-- Sen. Obama receives two minutes of uninterrupted airtime on a future Monday edition of "The Situation Room."

Let's start there.

Good God, that is just outrageous. I knew that kinda stuff was going to come around, but I expeted it from some sleazy right wing swiftboat liar style organization "not tied to any campaign (right)" - not the supposed cable news channel of record.

Its their JOB to report FACTS. That is what they are supposed to do. That is supposedly their whole reason for existence. There are proofreaders and editors galore because things must be checked and double checked to ensure that what is being reported is factual. This was not a typo. Not a mistake. CNN is the sleazy right wing swiftboat liar style organization. One of them, anyway.

Try it on your own keyboard--the s and the b are too far apart to make the mistake of swapping them.

so what should we expect?

This is what they do. And they are also "picking" our primary candidates as we speak....and unfortunately for us, many will go with those "they" recommend. It goes to say that we are only selectively offended with all that they do; in other words, they have us where they want us!

Wasn't it Shakespeare that said, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet." Neither should any of us be judged by our names, or any physical characteristics. The record of our actions should be what we are judged upon. CNN (and anyone else that sinks this low) can put that in their pipe and smoke it.

I was shocked at the racism that reared its ugly head the last couple of election cycles -- mostly because I think that most of the country is past that kind of thing. An awful lot of people of all ethnicities are finding Barack Obama a very attractive possibility.

I hope very much that Obama himself is strong enough to withstand the Rovian tactics that are sure to come.

Too many people that should have caught it before air. Depending on what they use to create supers like the "Where's Obama?" one, no less than five people should have caught that before it hit air. Several of these people were involved and didn't fix it: Graphics Department, Chyron Operator, Clarity Operator, Techical Director, Show Director, Producer, Promotions Producer and Master Control Operator. I'm a TV news graphic artist, and that shit would be caught in an instant in our low 40's market. Not to mention the B is nowhere near the S.

Media bias does not occur in random fashion; rather it moves in the same overall direction again and again, favoring management over labor, corporations over corporate critics, affluent whites over inner-city poor, officialdom over protesters, the two-party monopoly over leftist third parties, privatization and free market "reforms" over public sector development, U.S. dominance of the Third World over revolutionary or populist social change, nation-security policy over critics of that policy, and conservative commentators and columnists like Rush Limbaugh and George Will over progressive or populist ones like Jim Hightower and Ralph Nader (not to mention more radical ones).

http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/Media/MediaManip_Parenti.html

When omission proves to be an insufficient form of suppression, the media resort to outright lies.

http://www.dailykos.com/comments/2007/1/1/194523/7128/93#c93

there are countless checks on the graphics department that should catch this sort of thing way before it gets to air. There are graphics created by an artist; the artist's work is then checked by their superior and then an associate producer or someone of that ilk whose job is to do nothing but read this stuff and then there are several other people including the show producer and director who should be looking at these graphics to make sure they say what they are intended to say. Rolling a "Where's Obama?" graphic over a picture of Middle Eastern dudes is pretty much not gonna happen by accident in the long sequence of stop gaps that they have in place. Please take a moment and think about how many times you have seen grossly inaccurate graphics over picture. It doesn't happen often and yet it happened repeatedly with Foley and I will just guess that it will happen a lot more with Obama in the future unless people really go after them hard.

sig image for a prepared story. In other words, a typo of that magnitude was NOT because of being rushed.
It may have been freudian, but nonetheless, a sig image has time to go through several eyes before airing.

a crawl typo is more forgivable, as its being typed almost immediately before air.

130. CNN is so obviously right leaning it's pathetic.
If one watches CNN International they see a completely different "news" show. One that is similar to a BBC newscast. They actually have informed debate there. Albeit CNN International is no great show either. CNN stateside is another thing altogether. It is pathetic watered down propaganda and debate for people with low IQ's. Can you say Glenn Beck? Anderson Cooper did a whole show on Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donell last week. These people have no shame and America eats this crap up. Here's a link to a clip of Ramsey Clark speaking of Saddams mock trial and execution on CNN International. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNA3t3guG90 I personally believe the whole U.S. is suffering from a personality disorder at this point thanks to Faux and CNN and General Electric owned MSNBC. We have military shows on the "Discovery" channel. Religious propaganda on the "History" channel and 27 channels of Religious freaks every Sunday morning. The Republicans kept us from being able to select what channels we really want this past summer so we are required to pay for all the crap if we want cable in our monopolized media. It's a farce. Capitalism my ass. Greed and extremism is what I see. Thankfully there is the internet for real information. Sheeple need to wake up in this country or even under the Dems it will continue to slide down hill.

it was designed to associate both men. And the 'apology' only reminds viewers of the association once more.

But let's face it, racist America would never vote for a black man for president, especially one named Obama Hussein, even though both bin Laden and Saddam were American creations. Obama's candidacy is DOA, unfortunately, since I believe he's a good honest man.

100 times better than both warmonger, right-wing whore Hillary and Senator Coward Heinz.

We'll have to go with John Edwards.

133. Filed complaint with FCC
Thats what I do when I see this type of crap now. Not that the FCC does anything for anyone but themselves, but at least it documented. All of the corporate media outlets are right wing and sorry but even MSN is! the only news I listen to or watch is Democracy Now.

141. In a certain way, it's flattering to Obama
At the risk of getting my privates caught in a sausage grinder, I would note that it could be a cry for Barack to run the country. As in "Where's Barack Obama? We need him to find these terrorists!" Lord knows that BushCo wouldn't find those two in the screenshot if they walked up to the White House and handcuffed themselves to the front gate.

But to most of the huddled masses, it's just (probably intentional) confusion.

146. CNN sucking up to the Machine for all those pesky flashes of honesty
Of course this was deliberate. It's the same as when they stick words like "loyalty" and "honor" on the wall behind President Dufus' head at speeches.

147. I make similar typos all the time...
I mean, I can easily see how somebody could be typing "Osama" and come out "Obama" - a lot of the time when I try to type "Bush, it comes out "Asshole"

(sorry, had to repeat that one from yesterday)

150. What's odd is we are entirely focused on this mistake - if they'd
gotten it right, they'd actually be questioning where's Osama, a sort of anti-chimp thing to do these days.

Though maybe the point of the whole story was to confuse the names.

Maybe the Democrats should focus on Obama's first name, and extend that to all the Repukes - call then Newt and John, etc., then use Barak and Hillary, etc.

151. CNN has APOLOGIZED... on Tuesdaymorning, per this article
Obama has accepted the apology as well.

This could have a good effect over the long term. Between the Ed Rogers comments and this error, it will likely 'sensitize' people so that they aren't likely to make the mistake again--and if they do, they'll be recognized for what they are--mean, vicious, racist assholes.

It does get that whole Hussein middle name thing back out there for a final rehash...once those things have been run through the grinder several times, the usual media response is "Been there, done that." It's good to let any distractions be chewed over and digested early, be they names that are unusual to the ears of middle America, or cocaine use, or what have you. Bush would probably not have had quite such a close race were it not for that concealing of the DUI--he might have picked up a few votes from the nitwits who often don't vote had he gotten that out there and over with very, very early.

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3347703,00.html

The blunder occurred Monday evening on Wolf Blitzer's news show "The Situation Room." Bloggers hurried to inform the network of the mistake, which was quickly corrected.

Tuesday, CNN issued an apology during its morning show, with both anchor Soledad O'Brien and Blitzer himself offering separate apologies. The network referred to the headline a "bad typographical error" by its graphics department.

"We want to apologize for that bad typo," Blitzer said. "We also want to apologize personally to Sen. Barack Obama. I'm going to be making a call to him later this morning to offer my personal apology."

A spokesman for Illinois Sen. Barack Obama said the apology was accepted.

"Though I'd note that the `s' and `b' keys aren't all that close to each other, I assume it was just an unfortunate mistake, and don't think there was any truly malicious intent," Vieto said.
