NBC - SADDAM TO BE EXECUTED WITHIN 48 HOURS
Edited on Thu Dec-28-06 06:56 PM by kpete

NBC: Saddam to be hanged by Sunday
Ex-dictator’s execution expected to be carried out by start of Eid holiday

BREAKING NEWS
NBC News and news services
Updated: 7 minutes ago

Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, sentenced to death for his role in 148 killings in 1982, will have his sentence carried out by Sunday, NBC News reported Thursday. According to a U.S. military officer who spoke on condition of anonymity, Saddam will be hanged before the start of the Eid religious holiday, which begins this Sunday.

Saddam’s sentence, handed down last month, ordered that he be hanged within 30 days.

Earlier Thursday, Saddam’s chief lawyer implored world leaders to prevent the United States from handing over the ousted leader to Iraqi authorities for execution, saying the former dictator should enjoy protection from his enemies as a "prisoner of war."

one question, not ever again, ever.

The truth will die with him, just the way the Republicans want it.

Sure, some truth will die with him..
But the important truths are already documented and unscrubable, although never discussed for some reason.

63. We don't need to ask, Judi
We know who supplied him. We still have the sales receipts.

Of course, he might be allowed a few last words. If so, he will no doubt disappoint those of us who hope he will point a finger. My bet is that he will say that he dies the legal president of Iraq, and that he is innocent of all charges because as president he had the legal right to murder, rape and torture, and yaddie yaddie yada.

I would have preferred he received a fair trial in an impartial court, but I have no doubt he would have been found guilty. I'll shed no tears.

19. i agree w. you mrcoffee, i don't expect any tears for saddam
saddam was a secular leader, he has no friends among the various religious hysterics who are already blowing the country to hell and gone

i don't think he'll be missed, he wasn't well liked, he was widely regarded as a nasty piece of work, and probably the sooner he's gone the sooner he'll be forgot

i'm only sorry he didn't decide to tell all he knows about rumsfeld et al. before croaking, as someone says downthread, the bfee will be glad to see a material witness to their crimes gone

I mean, if we *really* search our souls, if the US was invaded, even those of us here wouldn't be all that pleased at a foreign country hanging our *president*.

69. I agree
Shortly after Saddam was taken prisoner, I wrote a front page piece for DU stating that it would not be a turning point in terms of the Iraq insugency. My thesis was simple: The insugency had little to do with Saddam; his fate was a red herring.

Nothing has changed.

Have they arranged for the hanging to be in prime time with a full media build-up and maybe Janet Jackson in tights singing America The Beautiful and maybe a few emotional human interest stories of Saddam as a kid told by the fireside.

something that it had every right, as a sovreign country, to do. Was that wise? Probably not, but there is the fact. Just because the Hague has autority with some countries doesn't mean that it does every where. And it doesn't have such authority over the USA. To think otherwise is wishful thinking.

I've researched this issue in depth and written a 20 pg paper on it...As the so-called 'leader of the free world', the U.S. should have signed on for a million and one reasons, a primary one being that not doing so sets the *worst* goddamn example for the other states that feel they too are 'above the law'...

as far as i am aware the facts are not in doubt, saddam may have had help orchestrating these murders (rummy, bush, etc.) but he himself did participate in them and was properly convicted

i'm not necessarily a death penalty supporter, in fact i'm generally an opponent, but in this case i see no good reason not to let the law take its course

dude's guilty, a lot of people were harmed in the making of this motion picture, he had a trial, appeal denied, it's over

Did you follow this trial? How many judges and lawyers were changed? Get real. This was a kangaroo court and everyone knew that no matter what, Bush was going to have his hanging. Fuck Bush. I hope he meets a similar end.

Edited on Thu Dec-28-06 09:37 PM by pitohui
it is up to the judge and jury the fate of those men, who i believe to be guilty of horrendous crimes for which they should answer

if say rummy were tried, convicted, and sentenced to death for a capital offense, do you seriously expect me to light a candle and weep for a commuted sentence? well i'm sure as hell not going to tell another country what to do with a leader i consider equally as culpable

the death penalty is legal and frequent in the usa, if someone who is indubitably guilty is sentenced to death, i will be more concerned about the many who are sentenced to death or long sentences who are NOT clearly guilty

don't expect me to cry for rummy or saddam or anyone who participated in these crimes

93. My biggest problem is the fact that this is a trial in a nation that is still...
under occupation by the United States, I don't think they are even capable of giving a fair trial for ANYONE, from the alleged thieves to even their former head of state. Its seems foolhardy to claim that they have sovereignty over even this issue when they can't even control half of what goes on within their own borders.

By the way, impeachment isn't necessary, no one I mentioned is STILL IN OFFICE, they are all "normal" civilians now, and should be prosecuted for their various crimes. I'm not a death penalty advocate myself, but I won't shed a tear for Saddam, nor do I think he is innocent of anything he was accused of, but too many things were swept under the rug, I want to know if the United States government at the time KNEW WHAT he was going to use the weapons we sold him for. They KNEW he was going to use most of them against Iran, we already know that, just like we knew that Iran was going to use most of the weapons we sold them against Iraq, but the gassing of civilians? We didn't stop supporting him after that, so my question is, did we know he'd use them against civilians?

After all, the news was released in the last day or two that Ford most firmly disagreed with what Bush pulled off in Iraq. Bush has been chastised with the release of that news by a President people respect far more.

He's been dissed from the Great Beyond. He cries out for cover. He also doesn't want anyone to ever get a chance to talk to Hussein and find out the truth of US/Hussein history.

44. He should die like Slobodan Milošević, in a jail cell from a heart attack.
Or hanging after sentencing in the World Court. But the U.S. is done with the World Court, need to keep things to Iraq, which we control, at least in some aspects.

With a straight face and in all seriousness I say the following:

As evil as Saddam Hussein is, the U.S. knows that if they don't kill him he'll probably wind up back in power in Iraq.

I believe the above statement. I still have problems wrapping my brain around it but I think there's an arguable case given the "popularity" of the Ba'ath (sp?) party and the large number of generals, etc. who are actually favorable to him. Saddam is a monster, he's evil, but he did know how to keep the country under his control. Within that tyrannical sphere of control, more people led prosperous lives and enjoyed freedoms* than they do today in Iraq.

50. Very stupid
They should have shipped him off to the Hague for trial. Or they should have made the Iraqi government wait until we left to deal with him.

Hanging him now, after a questionable trial, under American occupation makes it look like we are hanging him. This installed Iraqi government is suspect, and barely legitimate. The court was a kangaroo court. How many times did we change judges? There is no one serving in the Iraqi government that hasn't been hand picked by the Americans. Everyone in the world, except republican Americans, understands this.

This is a very stupid move on our part and will look bad to Iraqi citizens and the rest of the civilized world. But, we haven't done anything smart yet in Iraq. So why start now.

Saddam killed 148 Iraqi citizens in 1982. And we have killed how many Iraqi citizens? I believe that number is 500,000 by some counts. And we are hanging him. What a strange world we live in.

96. Justice will finally come
to the one responsible for the destruction of the WTC, and subsequently 3000 Americans. The whole point of OIF was a direct response to 9/11, so clearly Saddam is to blame for all the carnage that took place against the US. If it wasn't for Saddam, the US would never have invaded Iraq only to lose 3000 more Americans in the process.

I can't think of any other examples of Saddam inflicting pernicious harm against the US other than the above, so please feel free to chime in.

So for those 6000 Americans who have lost their lives since 9/11, you will finally have closure once this execution is carried out.

Not everyone has your genius powers of observation and insight.

I won't ask how you knew the poster was being sarcastic, because any explanation would undoubtedly be way too advanced for my intellectual limitations.

At any rate, hopefully you aren't too overly bothered by my posting a simple link to a recent news article which quotes Bush as admitting Saddam wasn't involved with the event sof 911.

What I am bothered by is an undeserved and misguided attack on a fellow DU'er just because they had a low post count and some had a knee jerk reaction to it which clouded their common sense judgment from seeing how readily apparent it was that the post was sarcastic.

It always bothers me to see people unfairly attacked. Now that you've been made aware to the error, I hope you will apologize to the poster, even if in private. Thanks.

162. That's True. Yours Wasn't Really An Attack. Some Of The Others Were.
Yours did come off to me as having a hidden insinuation that the poster was a freeper, however, in need of schooling on the Saddam connection to 9-11. That in itself was somewhat unfair, as it was kinda insinuating that the poster was a complete an utter moron to have believed those things. That wasn't the case though, since the poster was being sarcastic. You are correct in that your post was quite benign, other than the assumption that the poster was a moronic freeper or something.

My only advice would be not to look at post count when reading a post. It really can alter your perception of intent when doing so, as can be seen here. Like I stated below, if this poster had 1000+ posts I'd say it's likely you wouldn't have responded in such a way.

How do you know the poster was being sarcastic?
There is NOTHING in that post that indicates that at all. NOTHING! There are MANY ways that the poster could have indicated that they intended to make an sarcastic statement, but they didn't. Until they do, I have to believe that it was sincere not sarcasm.

Perhaps you should leave them to respond or leave their hit and run, meant to be devisive post to speak for itself to each reader themselves? Post count aside, let them speak for themselves and their thoughts on their own ... unless this is a personal friend of yours that you have some inside information on what their real intent was. :eyes:

118. Common Sense.
Tell me: If the poster had 1000+ posts, would you have blinked for a second that it wasn't sarcasm?

Don't be so easily clouded just due to a meaningless post count number.

And no matter what, you still can't justify your use of such vicious attack.

121. You assume much about my reaction that is not true.
Post count has nothing to do with it. And yes, I would have responded the same were it someone with 6 figures in their post count.

You really need to get over yourself and stop projecting a motive to others and their words. Both mine and the OP being discussed here.

Must be nice to be a mind reader ... but you aren't one as far as I can see.

123. Just Apologize To The Poster For The Unwarranted Attack And Be Done With It LOL
It was uncalled for, and also completely inaccurate.

But if you don't find it necessary to apologize to an innocent victim who you attacked wrongly, what can I tell ya.

166. To all, please pardon my post.
I ignored the stated notion that sarcasm does not translate well in written form.

I thought it best to use reverse physcology to express my disgruntlement on how the Adminstration has managed, successfully, to conflate Saddam's fate and securing the homeland. I suppose I wanted to conceal any perceived sympathy for an abhorrent figure, as well, but as I have come to learn, DU is truly a progressive forum, where opinions will be fully judged on their merit alone.

I thank graciously Operationmindcrime for respectfully clarifying my remarks after I had unwittingly failed to do so. Huzzah, my friend!

114. Yet Another Unwarranted Knee Jerk Attack. You Owe The Poster An Apology IMHO.
Edited on Fri Dec-29-06 01:01 AM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
Why am I the only one responding that saw the sarcasm to be so obvious?

Do you really let your perception be skewed so easily because of a low post count?

If a 1000+ poster posted this would you have responded the same way? Would you had known then how obvious the sarcasm was?

Did you not have a low post count once too? Do you think being treated this way would've been fair?

It is obvious that post was sarcasm. Little more reasonable thought, little less attack towards our newer members. That's all I have to say.

119. It has nothing to do with post count at all
Why not let the poster respond for themselves? As I said in my post to you upthread, there is nothing there to indicate sarcasm was the intent at all.

I have nothing to apologize to the poster for unless and until they clarify their statement on their own.

Perhaps since you are the only one to "see the obvious sarcasm" perhaps you are the one that has been duped. Ever consider that?

122. You Are Being Disingenuous. Of Course It Mattered To You. Answer Honestly: Would You Have
responded the same way if the post was made by a 1000+ member?

And yes, there was something to indicate sarcasm. It's called common sense. But because of the low post count, common sense wasn't used. Knee jerk reaction was, and it caused you to reply with a vicious attack of which the poster not only doesn't deserve, but is against the rules.

And if you don't like the fact that I'm defending someone attacked needlessly, sorry bub. I'll always do such things.

And if you need further assistance to convince you this was in fact sarcasm, here:

Stop projecting your "concerns" on me. I have stated clearly what my intent was and when an apology would be warranted. I didn't not assign the responsibility for my actions to you nor did I ask you to be, nor want you to be, my conscience.

You didn't provide any insight into them. Since the false accusation is the very heart of this discussion, I'd like to know if you still consider your attack accurate and warranted after reading the posts.

It is my hope that you would quickly be able to surmise that you were in the wrong, that the post was blatant sarcasm, and that you owe the poster an apology. Let's hope you come through. :hi:

We have all probably been attacked here viciously at some point when we were newbies, and know how much that sucked. I just think it's the right thing to do to make up for such an attack.

130. Not Victory. Was Just A Hope. Why Are You Being So Stubborn Though?
For God's sake, if you attacked somebody who was innocent, don't you think it would be the RIGHT thing to do to apologize to the victim? Don't you think it's worth a few minutes of your effort to do some due diligence to make a less ignorant knee jerk assessment of the post? Don't you think a fellow DU'er who will hopefully have a long tenure here deserves that respect?

This isn't a game, Sydnie, and I wasn't playing. The post was blatantly sarcastic, or at least was to me as I read it, and you and others jumped all over the poster unfairly and viciously. In reality, those attacks were wrong and misguided. So I don't think it's playing to want to defend an innocent victim and request an apology for the attack. You're under no obligation, of course, but I would hope you'd agree it's the right thing to do.

Attacks like that suck when you're a newbie, especially when you're a legitimate one. I wish you wouldn't be so stubborn as to let the attack stand, after being informed that it was in error.

Goodnight.

war criminal. the flames in Iraq will grow and the violence dramatically increase. Our troops will suffer even more losses for the execution of this killer, an execution the result of an illegal war by one of the worlds most vindictive men in history.

Bush has cost nearly 3000 troops lives illegally and without conscience,--------------------Sadam doesn't belong in power but neither does Bush.

and we have NO right to execute the country's leader . . . the invasion and occupation were crimes of immense proportion, and the execution of Saddam will be a an equally despicable crime . . .

will ANYONE ever be held accountable for the war crimes and the crimes against humanity perpetrated by BushCo? . . .

will the Democratic Congress have the balls to say "Enough!" and bring this atrocity to an end? . . .

given the corporate profits involved, I sincerely doubt it . . .

163. UPDATE

Saddam's Lawyer: Execution at Dawn

By Jeralyn, Section War In Iraq
Posted on Fri Dec 29, 2006 at 02:09:46 PM EST

An anonymous lawyer for Saddam was now claiming Hussein will be executed on Saturday at dawn.

I'm not buying the U.S. denial and claim that Saddam remains in U.S. custody:

Raising the tension, US authorities also cancelled a planned meeting on Saturday between Saddam and his defense team, lawyer Issam Ghazawi told AFP. "I just received an email from US authorities in Baghdad in which a security official said it has been decided to cancel our visit planned for Saturday in Baghdad with president Saddam Hussein," Ghazawi said.

"We can't have you in Baghdad tomorrow. We cannot provide any protection for you. You can't see Saddam because he is not in our physical custody anymore," said the email according to Ghazawi, who read it by phone to an AFP reporter.

The White House is denying responsibility for the execution
