Would anyone let their kids watch Saddam being hanged on TV?
Edited on Thu Dec-28-06 05:34 PM by NNN0LHI
I bet the Republicans would. I heard Bush1 get asked yesterday about what he thought about Saddam being hanged and he was just giddy over the idea. Like he could hardly wait or something.

4. Jeebus Christ, NO!! I also turned off the teevee when the 'death-photos'
of Saddam's sons were being displayed like some obscene Bush-trophy.
Truly twilight-zone time in the U.S....

15. Not this guy in the South
Whatever happens is up to George W Bush. If he wants Saddam
to live, he will live. If Bush wants him to die, he shall
die.

You remember Bush's attitude about another death he ordered ?

"'Please,'" Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock
desperation, "'don't kill me.'" I must look shocked
-- ridiculing the pleas of a condemned prisoner who has since
been executed seems odd and cruel because he immediately
stops smirking. --  (Tucker Carlson)

Like most draft dodgers, Bush enjoys the thoughts of killing
the helpless too much to suit me.

16. Welcome to DU!
Bush's attitude toward death clearly shows he has no feelings for others.

19. Hey, I agree, and
my kids are 39, 42, and 45 years old. Yeah, I know they're grown, and don't live with me, but I'd do everything in my power to prevent it, and none of them would have the desire to watch, anyway.

7. Absolutely not!
I couldn't watch something like that - I would never let a child witness such a violent act if I could prevent it.

8. IMO, the parents who would allow, if not encourage, their kiddy-poos
to watch a televised execution would have had ringseats for Jesus on the cross.

10. If they loved "Passion of Christ" they'll love "Death of Saddam."
A real crowd pleaser that Saddam.

Since most Bush backers are a) fundamentalist Christians, and, b) brainwashed, they'll not only watch the execution but encourage their children to watch. Remember, these are people who cling to the idea that their savior was executed and love the image so much that they put models of the execution device everywhere. They even dangle them from their own necks.

20. every American should watch the execution
It's nominally what we're paying for, in blood and money -- thousands of lives, billions of dollars. We should all damn well watch the execution of Saddam Hussein and ask ourselves if it was worth invasion, occupation, regional unrest, sectarian civil war, national isolation from one-time allies, and endless subsidies for bush/cheney's biggest campaign donors just to see Saddam's neck snap. How lucky we are that the soldiers didn't shoot him on sight, for now we can have yet another sham trial and pretend that somehow justice is served by sending yet another man to yet another gallows.

The sight is dismal;
And our affairs from England come too late;
The ears are senseless that should give us hearing,
To tell him that his commandment is fulfill'd,
That Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead...

21. Interesting question...
If we choose, as a society, to permit state sanctioned murder I do not believe we should hide from the reality of what we are doing. I have often said that if we took that obligation seriously - if execution were not hidden away, if the jury that sentenced a man to die had to participate in the execution, or if we found other ways to make what we are doing when we execute people more real that executions would vanish almost immediately. The reactions in this thread to the thought of watching (or letting your children watch) an execution support that theory.

This is not a theoretical concern for me. My daughter, from as early as age 5, visited her uncle on death row and understood that he was living there because the state intended to kill him. She saw (at age 14 or so) some of the brutal photos from Abu Ghraib. I don't know whether she has seen any of the beheading films or not - but I would not prohibit it if she wanted to, nor would I prohibit her from watching an execution (Saddam or anyone else).

These things are part of the unfortunate reality of life - and unfortunately are a part of what we as a country are supporting. I am not sure we do ourselves any favors by permitting ourselves and our children to pretend it does not exist. How different is our rejection of the thought of watching an execution from the position of many who do not want to regularly hear the Iraq death count, or who don't want to see the bodies on the evening news? Isn't the point of the Rangle draft bill theoretically to stick the reality of war in the faces of those who are trying to ignore it? Why is Saddam's execution so essentially different that many of the responses in this thread are that only "freepers" would watch/permit their children to watch?
