3. No, just like some freepers will say ugly things about Carter and Clinton
when they die--there will be those on DU who will not mourn Chimpy. I've been among those who have expressed sympathy towards Ford's passing today and not attacked him beyond saying I felt he was a "mediocre president", but when the chimp passes the best thing I could do is stay off of DU because if you can't say anything nice about someone when they die it's best not to say anything.

37. Is it possible to express sympathy without defending the wrongs someone
committed before they died?

I have no problem with expressing sympathy for the family and friends of the deceased. But does that mean we have to actually construct a falsehood about the life of the deceased?

Because if that is what expressing sympathy is about, then I don't think I can meet that standard. It's very clear to the whole country now that no matter what the crimes of the powerful, they are mostly exempt from justice. It seems a little too much to ask that they also be exempt from the scorn and derision of the people, just because they die, like everyone else does.

4. You know, that's a good question
I'm trying to remember what I said when Reagan died. I doubt very much I expressed sympathy, although I did have some for Nancy. I know I complained loudly about the days and days of Reagasm in the media. Privately, I saved the pictures of him in the newspaper to use as paper for my snakes to poop on.

I'd probably be inclined to say nothing about Bush unless someone tried to convince me he was a great President and great human being.

70. Especially considering that, by then, all those presidential papers that
Edited on Thu Dec-28-06 12:21 AM by calimary
junior ordered deep-sixed for decades more, the moment he set foot in Gore's Oval Office (and that included reagan's papers, AND daddy's papers - and I believe those were about to become public) will finally be public domain. Those here 100 years from now will know a fuller story, especially of those dirty secrets little boots moved so swiftly to bury. I suspect there had to be some pretty shitty stuff in there for bushie boy to do that. Probably all involving his dad, but I bet reagan is seriously besmirched in them, too. He almost got impeached for Iran/Contra. SHOULD have been impeached for Iran/Contra. They all belonged in jail. That will probably become blindingly evident once those papers are opened back up. To the eyes of the public. US. We-the-owners of those papers. After all, we paid for 'em. Some of us did so with blood.

As to the original question - well, I'll probably try to be somewhat polite. Maybe just an eyelash-width's worth. But I sure as hell will NOT be rewriting history. And frankly, for me to speak kindly of bush whenever it is that he dies will make a huge hypocrite out of me. I can't think of a single kind thing to say about him.

Ronnie Raygun was the one who didn't allow additional funding for Alzheimer's to go forward, so it was poetic justice in my opinion that he fell victim to the very disease he tried to ignore....and that he doomed countless others to die ignobly from....

I am not usually one to speak ill of the dead, but when he dies, it will focus attention on his years as president, and its important to talk about his dire record and abysmal decisions, if only so that we learn from history, and not repeat it.

19. You ain't worth the blood That runs in your veins
Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

I'm no special Ford fan; but as I said on another thread, if I dance on his grave, then it trivializes my dancing on Pinochet's grave (as I have been doing metaphorically); or even eventually on Dubya's grave, or Thatcher's.

There are some people, though not very many, who do so much evil that there is no honest way to greet their deaths except by some equivalent of 'good riddance'. I don't think Ford was in that category.

30. To quote Hunter S Thompson when Nixxon died:
"If the right people had been in charge of Nixon's funeral, his casket would have been launched into one of those open-sewage canals that empty into the ocean just south of Los Angeles. He was a swine of a man and a jabbering dupe of a president. Nixon was so crooked that he needed servants to help him screw his pants on every morning. Even his funeral was illegal. He was queer in the deepest way. His body should have been burned in a trash bin."

All of the above would be too good for Bush.

43. I've never figured out why we're not supposed to say anything
bad about someone who just died. If I had good reason to think he or she was a detestable insult to the rest of the carbon based community, why should my opinion change once that person kicks? Now, I wouldn't express my opinion to the family at the funeral. That's just uncivil, but, who knows, maybe the family shares my opinion.

I'm pretty much indifferent to Ford. I consider him an average person, neither evil nor saintly.

Bush, on the other hand, if I outlive him, I'll sing, if I'm able, dance and scare the horses with my language.

61. I can't believe nobody's posted this one yet -
George Bush in Hell

George W Bush has a heart attack and dies. He goes to hell where the devil is waiting for him.

"I don't know what to do here," says the devil."You are on my list but I have no room for you. You definitely have to stay here, so I'll tell you what I'm going to do.

I've got three folks here who weren't quite as bad as you. I'll let one of them go, but you have to take their place. I'll even let you decide who leaves.George thought that sounded pretty good, so he agreed. The devil opened the first room. In it was Richard Nixon and a large pool of water.

He kept diving in and surfacing empty-handed over and over. Such was his fate in hell. "No!" George said. "I don't think so. I'm not a good swimmer and don't think I could do that all day long. " The devil led him to the next room. In it was Tony Blair with a sledgehammer and a room full of rocks.

All he did was swing the hammer, time after time."No!" I've got this problem with my shoulder. I would be inconstant agony if all I could do was break rocks all day."commented George.

The devil opened a third door. In it, George saw Bill Clinton lying on the floor with his arms staked over his head, and his legs staked in spread-eagle pose. Bent over him was Monica Lewinsky, doing what she does best.

George Bush looked at this in disbelief for a while and finally said,
"Yeah, I can handle this."

The devil smiled and said, "Ok, Monica, you're free to go!!!

62. The best 'W in the afterlife' joke:
Bush dies and goes to heaven to meet St Peter at the Pearly Gates. Peter looks at Bush, sticks out his hand and says, "Nice to meet you, Mr. Bush. We've been waiting for this day, welcome to Heaven." He goes on: "It's now our policy to allow people to choose whether they spend all of eternity in eith..." Bush, being the incredibly impatient man that he is, grabs Peter and slaps him on the back and says, "No, no, Pete, my man, I've already decided, I want to spend the rest of eternity here in Heaven with you and my homeboy Jesus. He and I got tight back in Midland." Peter is insistent, "No, George. We made an agreement with Lucifer that ALL newcomers must visit both Heaven and Hell for a day each before making their decision. YOU MUST VISIT HELL." As Peter leads Bush over to the elevator, he smiles kindly, shakes Bush's hand, encourages him to enjoy his stay in Hell and says he'll look forward to tomorrow when Bush comes back for his stay in Heaven.

Bush boards the elevator shaking his head, wondering why they're making him spend a day in Hell. "Why? I've done everything fine, confessed all my sins, quit drinking, ran for president - won! What's a little cheating here and there? - why couldn't they see I'll would want to be in Heav..." His thought stopped mid-sentence as the doors opened and he realised he was on a golf course on the most beautiful day he'd ever experienced. There was his daddy, Tom DeLay, Karl Rove, Bandar Bush, Kenneth Lay - all of his old buddies with beer in hand and each with some of the most bodacious, beautiful women on each arm that he'd EVER seen. "And this is considered Hell?" he thought. He stepped out of the elevator, introduced himself to the Devil and asked for a tour. They played a round of golf, enjoyed some more beers and the sight of all the nearly naked women running around chashing and picking up golf balls for them. He couldn't believe himself. He remarked to the Devil, "I don't see why anyone would ever want to leave this place." Lucifer just leaned back and laughed while sweeping his arm out, "Isn't it great? Blue skies, sunshine, women, beer and golf. What more could you want?" Bush just shook his head in disbelief.

Later that evening, the Devil came over and patted Bush on the back and said, "Well, Georgie, it's been great having you, but you have to go up to Heaven and spend a day there." Bush was insistent that he didn't want to leave. Why would he when he had everything he ever wanted here in Hell? Leave Heaven for Laura. He wouldn't need her here. The Devil was insistent, "YOU MUST VISIT HEAVEN." For he knew the wrath he'd experience from God if he didn't send Bush back.

Reluctantly, Bush boarded the elevator for the ride back to Heaven. Peter met him at the door again and asked how the visit in Hell was. "Great!" said Bush. "I don't see how you have anyone pick Heaven nowadays." Peter just chuckled to himself as he led Bush through the Pearly Gates. Here, everyone was sitting around on their clouds in white flowing robes, singing, talking in hushed tones and discussing ways to make the place better - for everyone. There was Mother Theresa, Ghandi, Nelson Mandela - all these wonderful people Bush hadn't given a second thought to. "B-O-R-I-N-G." thought Bush, "Why would anyone choose this lame place when they've got beer, sex and golf in Hell?"

At the end of his stay in Heaven, Bush approached Peter and said, "Hey man, thanks for the tour, but I really think I'll fit better in Hell." Peter shook Bush's hand one last time and put him on the elevator, laughing hysterically as soon as the doors were closed. Bush just couldn't wait to get to Hell. Bush just kept repeating things in his head: Sex. Booze. Golf. Sex. Booze. Golf. He started rubbing his hands together in anticipation.

As the doors opened he stopped in his tracks. No longer there was the golf course. Instead, he saw a dark, dank, smoggy city where his friends were stumbling past, eyes glazed from exhaustion as they wore disgustingly dirty rags and picked up a never ending trail of trash. Bush searched for his friends. Yep, they were all there though none had the energy to come over and welcome him in. They didn't care. The Devil sauntered over and slapped Bush on the back, "Welcome home, George." Bush looked at the Devil, stunned. "Yesterday ..."

"Yesterday," the Devil started, "You came down here and we all campaigned for you, promised you the world you've always dreamed about." The Devil started rolling with laughter, "Today, George, today you voted for us."

75. No. Ford's legacy is ambiguous. GW's is not.
Ford deserves some criticism and some praise. Bush deserves only the former.

77. we should tell the truth always
unfortunately the majority will be out here to shout us down and yell about how the man is dead and let us focus on the positive

well guess what i consider grown men who allow themselves to be used as puppets and tools of evil to be themselves evil

* is stupid and probably brain-damaged, as was reagan who had alzheimer's, ford played too much football sans helmet -- and ya know what? it don't matter, there are plenty of stupid people who did NOT choose to let themselves be a puppet on a string and did not sell themselves to richard nixon or anybody else for the sake of money and power

dying doesn't change an evil man or a weak man into a saint

80. It'll all depend on the cause, if it's due to natural causes or execution for war crimes
Edited on Thu Dec-28-06 11:38 AM by Truth Hurts A Lot
The comments and snark will be endless, and even I will probably chime in.

If it's due to a freak accident or assassination while in office, the responses might be more amiable/concerned.

81. A prediction
I predict that when Bushie dies, a HUGE MOB will charge at the motorcade to the horse drawn carage with axes at hand and topple the casket over and chop it to bits.

88. I wouldn't rejoice
I won't defend his record. Nor can I say that I would mourn.

But I wouldn't rejoice. I don't believe in celebrating ANYBODY's death. And I'd probably extend my sympathies to his family. I know DU has an animus against anything Bush touches; I have no special love for the Bush family or his daughters, but I don't begrudge them the right to love their father and mourn his death.

OTOH, I would certainly criticize his record, especially if obituaries are too hagiographic. But no, I would not rejoice.
