Global warming deniers - the new Holocaust deniers?
It's wierd, just the other day I was wondering privately if those who deny global warming exists could be compared to those who deny the Holocaust ever occured. Then last night, I'm watching a program on the History Channel about seven ways in which civilization could end. It ranged from the most unlikely (gamma ray bursts, black holes) to the most likely (pandemics, global warming). One of the scientists basically made the same comparison. He said "you wouldn't have a discussion on the Holocaust and invite someone who denies it happened."

I was just wondering, given the sheer overwhelming evidence that global warming exists and is occuring as we speak, if this is a good comparison?

1. I saw that program last night.
I think it was an apt comparision. Did you also notice all the "deniers" were appearing on FOX News...?

2. I'm not to keen on comparing things to the Holocaust or American slavery or any historical horrors..
But this one (Global Warming) has the potential to take all of us out, so deniers of it are enablers of the potential extinction of mankind.

4. We're comparing those who deny such events - not the actual events themselves
There is irrefutable proof that the Holocaust happened. Yet some people, for whatever reason, still want to deny it occured. Same with global warming. It's happening. Greenland is melting. The polar ice caps are melting. There is so much evidence that the planet is heating up, it's can't be denied. Yet some people still insist it's not happening.

7. I don't know anyone who says the earth is not warmer, the dispute is the cause(s)
duration, and impacts. That is quite different than denying a horrific historical fact

8. I've heard several people claim the earth is not warming up
They try to claim that the warming we see is just a normal trend, and that the earth is not warming up overall. I've actually heard people say that the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are thickening! This, despite obvious satellite photos that show that both are shrinking at alarming rates.

Then you have Michael Crichton, who wrote a best-selling novel based on the idea that "global warming" is a scientific hoax designed to scare the general public.

5. There are some differences:
The Holocaust taught lessons that were well learned by some (and are being forgotten by some of the most unlikely), while Global Warming's lessons have barely been sketched out.

The Holocaust meant many deaths, but they'll pale in comparison to what's coming.

6. Event in progress versus historical event.
That difference makes the comparison almost meaningless - it changes most of the motivations, transforms the potential impact and expectations of the denial, and means that completely different response strategies are needed.
