Baath Party Threatens to Retaliate

Wednesday December 27, 2006 1:16 PM

BY SHAFIKA MATTAR

Associated Press Writer

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) - Saddam Hussein's Baath Party threatened Wednesday to retaliate
if the ousted Iraqi leader is executed, warning in an Internet posting it would target
U.S. interests anywhere.

The statement appeared on a Web site known to represent the party, which was disbanded
after U.S.-led forces overthrew Saddam in 2003. The site is believed to be run from
Yemen, where several exiled Baathists are based.

"Our party warns again of the consequences of executing Mr. President and his comrades,"
the statement said.

"The Baath and the resistance are determined to retaliate, with all means and everywhere,
to harm America and its interests if it commits this crime," the statement added, referring
to Baath fighters as "the resistance."

4. His supporters will go nuts. They should have had a proper trial.
I think both supporters and non-supporters will expect justice. Bush has murdered more Iraqis.

8. just another day in Iraq....
People wondered what effect the arrest of Saddam was gonna make. As with other leaders who have been arrested or killed. So far, not much dramatic effect has occurred. Iraq is out of control. When Saddam is executed there will probably be an increase in violence. But there is already so much violence there, will anyone notice?

10. Welcome to DU earthlover
I hope you are wrong about the increase in violence but that is a good point you make about the non-event Saddam's arrest made. I am thinking that his death will make an equal amount of impact, all things considered.

9. A day of peace....then back to the civil war
Edited on Wed Dec-27-06 09:56 AM by chknltl
I seem to recall that there was a lull in the war a short while ago due to the soccer playoffs. If the execution is broadcast on local TV and if the locals have electricity scheduled for that hour of the day then I am guessing that there will be a similar lull. After which the civil war will get back to business as usual. I think the folks who are behind the fighting are doing so in order to gain control of larger pieces of Iraq. They are all equally quite happy that the previous owner is out of the way at this point. I am betting in the bigger scheme of things, the impact of Saddam's execution will be a non-event for Iraq, when compared to the struggles the people face there daily.

I am wondering what kind of media event our own spin-meister's: faux-"news" will be told to put on the execution. Seems to me that this may get tauted as proof that the shrub was right in going after regime change, that Democracy has prevailed over in Iraq! That's such a hollow victory all things considered, but the bushcons will play it to their base nonetheless. I predict a press conference from the idiot in chief where he glares out at the camera and threatens the other "enemies of Democracy" with a similar fate from the hard working citizens of the world.

That's my uninformed prediction...

12. A Lot Of Cheering And Shooting Guns In The Air, For Sure.
The day it happens will be a day of much relief for countless numbers of Iraqi's.

Other than that, not sure what else will happen.

13. ...as though the clouds lifted
suddenly, the bearers of arms will lay them down...the bombings will stop...people of goodwill on all three sides will exit their homes, wearing brightly colored clothes and embrace all...the oil from the pipelines will flow unimpeded, paying us back for our expense and tribulations...there will be unparalleled joy which these peoples have not experienced since the land was called Ur...

...or not...
