Sex offender allegedly plots kidnap-for-pardon schemes
Plans included killing victim's mother, impaling boy and his siblings
BY TODD RICHMOND
Associated Press

JUNEAU, Wis. — David Day wants out of prison so badly that authorities say he planned to have five kids killed unless Gov. Jim Doyle freed him.

In something straight out of a TV thriller, Day, a convicted sex offender, allegedly hatched a plot from behind bars to have his 12-year-old victim's mother kidnapped and killed unless the boy recanted his testimony. After police got wind of the scheme, he switched to even more brutal tactics: hire someone to kidnap the boy himself and his siblings — and have them impaled unless the governor pardoned him and he got $1 million, investigators say.

"It does sound like something out of a television show, but unfortunately, I believe it was certainly David's intent to have something real happen," said Washington County Sheriff's detective Mark Sette, who helped put Day away on sexual assault charges.

"I think that he is just a guy who finds himself in a desperate situation," Sette said, "and he is attempting to do anything and everything to get out of that situation."

an exception needs to be made.

5. That would certainly reduce the scale of the work they do
On the other hand, maybe he'd just be best off getting transfered to the facility in Abu Ghraib

6. Headline says "sexual offender" but that seems rather broad
Edited on Mon Dec-25-06 09:01 PM by SimpleTrend
The article claims Day is 47-years old and "a convicted sex offender" because of an incident with a now 12-year old boy but the precise charge is "sexual assault".

While the headline and text's term of "sexual offender" seems to include the smaller subset of pedophiles; it also includes 4-year old boys who are alleged to hug a teacher (from recent news reports) as well as many other reports over the years that educators and school administrators have apparently done to make students feel like they're sexual offenders when there is no court involved to insure that a proper investigation and prosecution takes place with commensurate competent defense counsel, all in an apparent attempt to instill guilt in the youngsters involved.

From prison, Day allegedly plans murder of several kinds to get the 12-year old's testimony rescinded, but hasn't carried out any murder, apparently, and probably cannot from prison unless he's "released".

Among other problems I have with this story, the "sexual offender" portion of the headline and text is so broad as to lose meaning within the context of the seriousness of the allegations, while curiously the "kidnap-for-pardon schemes" portion seems to be understated since a desire for murder ("impaled") was also alleged in the text.

Here's an interesting phrase in the article portion alleging a complaint filed: "They discussed the plan in code" referring to Day and Dale's alleged conspiracy for kidnap, ransom, and impalement (murder), but then a whole string of conclusions is made without using quotes. Whose code? The surveillants'?

A detective is quoted who seems to want Day "released" from prison because of the convict's danger to the life and liberty of the boy's relatives or boy(s) who apparently testified against Day, though how he might be "released" isn't specified. Does the detective who allegedly said "released" mean literally, figuratively, or both?

The article doesn't seem to say. The article also mentions TV thrillers which are commonly understood to be fiction and sometimes based upon novels. Perhaps this article is a test marketing of an idea for a TV thriller? If so, then how might real facts be embellished for such a test marketing?

Oh, wait, I didn't read the text carefully or slowly enough. It says "straight out of a TV thriller" so this TV thriller must have already been filmed, produced, and shown on TV. Anyone know the name or title?
