CHESTER, England - As Christmas approaches, a virgin mother is anxiously awaiting the arrival of her offspring. She’s Flora, the Komodo dragon.

In an evolutionary twist, Flora has managed to become pregnant all on her own without any male help. It would seem the timing is auspicious: The seven baby Komodo dragons are due this festive season.

“We were blown away when we realized what she’d done,” said Kevin Buley, a reptile expert at Flora’s home at the Chester Zoo in this town in northern England. “But we certainly won’t be naming any of the hatchlings Jesus.”

bought a puppy with 6 toes on each foot, that's got to be almost as good as a virgin lizard birth. I hope now that I've said this that I won't wake up tomorrow and have a million toe worshipers in my yard in the morning.

If I could keep her still long enough I'll post a pic, maybe the toe worshipers can pray to that.

"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard," said Ford, "the wrong lizard might get in. Got any gin?"

Watch, some fundie will proclaim this event "divine influence" or some other rot. Like some others have posted, this phenomena is not unheard in nature. I do believe there is a species of small American lizard or skink whose population is entirely females. They engage in a mock mating ritual that triggers the reproductive cycle.
Like Jeff Goldblum's character in "Jurassic Park" said "Life finds a way!"
